Festivals of Light in Rhineland-Palatinate: This is how we brighten the dark days!
How beautiful winter time is in Rhineland-Palatinate! As darkness slowly falls over the region, a magical atmosphere of lights and colors emerges that not only warms people's hearts but also brightens the cold days. In the coming weeks, visitors can expect a variety of light events aimed at making the longer nights shine with festive splendor.
From November 20th, the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz will be transformed into a sea of lights. The “Christmas Garden” is decorated with sparkling lights around trees and railings and complemented by impressive art installations. For the particularly curious guests, the cable car to the castle is available. A small note: entry is subject to a fee.
Highlights of the festival of lights
A special event is the “Festival of Lights in the Sparkling Wine Castle” on November 8th in Wachenheim Castle, where there will be an LED show and live music. If you have the opportunity, you shouldn't miss the free tours of the illuminated vaulted cellar.
From November 28th to 30th, the “Winningen in the Lights” festival will take place in Winningen near Koblenz. Here the half-timbered houses are illuminated in bright colors while costumed actors stroll through the streets. At the same time, “Kreuznach shines” is celebrated in Bad Kreuznach, which features an impressive light trail in the Pauluskirche and an art workshop.
Winter adventures in the Ahr Valley
December brings out its own light: from December 5th, the “shore lights” appear in the Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler spa park. These illuminate the wickerwork and invite you to linger with culinary offerings such as mulled wine and delicious food. There is also a small artificial ice rink, especially for ice skating fans. This event runs until January, so you can still enjoy the winter atmosphere even after the holidays.
But that's not all. From December 12th to 14th, “Geierlights” on the Geierlay suspension rope bridge near Mörsdorf will delight visitors with illuminated LED lights that make the bridge a shining highlight. Anyone who decides on a guided mulled wine hike can look forward to a very special experience.
The cold winter days in Rhineland-Palatinate often seem long and dark, but the residents have a good knack for breathing new life into these months. From Koblenz to the Ahr Valley, there are various events that spread the magic of the Christmas season. Simply let yourself be enchanted and enjoy the magical moments of light that this region has to offer.
