Reading summer 2025 begins: 18 libraries invite you to a reading adventure!

The cozy summer reading season is just around the corner! The annual reading promotion campaign of the State Library Center begins in Rhineland-Palatinate on June 23rd and runs until August 24th. This time is all about the joy of reading and books. In the Rhine-Palatinate district, 18 libraries are taking part, providing special books especially for this event and organizing numerous events. The first information about this popular promotion comes from the Rhine Palatinate.

In this 18th edition of the reading summer, which is considered a real model of success, the participating children and young people can look forward to numerous exciting activities. In 2024, a record result of over 200,000 books read was recorded! That's even more than the 191,940 in the previous year. Around 25,000 children and young people took part last year, and the final event took place in Neustadt an der Weinstraße.

For all little bookworms

Culture Minister Katharina Binz highlights the important role of libraries and praises their commitment. Participation in the reading summer is free for children and young people aged 6 to 16, as long as they can read. Registered club members are allowed to borrow books from participating libraries and the club card gives access to exclusive reading summer media. In addition, for every book read there is a book tip or book check, which goes into a lottery drum for an exciting competition. The main prize? A two-day stay at Europapark Rust for the whole family, plus great prizes such as a Lego robotics set, a hoverboard and Bluetooth headphones!

Another highlight of the reading summer is the reading summer, which is especially intended for the little ones in daycare centers. It was launched in 2022 and is under the patronage of the Ministry for Family, Women, Culture and Integration Rhineland-Palatinate. Here children can have stories read to them by parents or readers. The reading summer not only promotes a love of reading, but also supports children's linguistic development. Anyone who has at least three books read to them and draws a picture with one will also receive a certificate - a great incentive for the little ones to dare to read aloud!

Linguistic support encouraged

Promoting reading skills not only has immediate benefits for children in a school context, but also has a lasting impact on their entire educational journey. According to that Federal Ministry of Education and Research Reading is a key skill that is essential not only for school lessons, but also for actively participating in life. Targeted projects to promote reading play a central role here, as they give children different access to the world of books.

Numerous institutions are committed to familiarizing all children – regardless of their social background – with books and reading opportunities. Projects like “Lesestart 1-2-3” have already reached millions of children and are part of a comprehensive strategy to promote reading skills in Germany. This makes the reading summer not only a celebration for young bookworms, but also an important building block in language development.

Seize your chance! Register, join in and immerse yourself in the world of books - because the summer holidays are just around the corner and the adventures are just a page away!
