E-bike driver injured: accident at Ludwigshafen intersection!
Last Saturday there was an unfortunate collision between a car and an e-bike in Ludwigshafen-Oggersheim, and the question of how safe these popular means of transport actually are is more relevant than ever. The accident occurred at around 7:10 p.m. at the intersection of Mannheimer Strasse and Sternstrasse when a 37-year-old driver was traveling in his Fiat Panda towards Hans-Warsch-Platz and a 35-year-old e-bike driver was driving in the same direction but heading to a different destination, Prälat-Caire-Strasse. A collision finally occurred at the traffic lights, although it remains unclear which of the two road users had the green light. Fortunately, the e-bike rider only sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for further treatment, while the driver was uninjured. The estimated material damage amounts to around 4,000 euros. Witnesses who observed the incident are asked to contact the police on 0621 96324250, as reported by Rheinpfalz.
The incident highlights the general safety of Pedelecs. More and more people are choosing to get around with e-bikes. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the proportion of Pedelec accident victims under the age of 45 rose from 11% in 2014 to 30.1% in 2023. During the same period, the number of Pedelec accidents resulting in personal injury increased dramatically: from 2,200 in 2014 to almost 24,000 in 2023. This corresponds to a tenfold increase in accidents and shows that although e-bikes are becoming more popular, they can also become more dangerous. The risk of being seriously or fatally injured in a fall is particularly high among older cyclists, and the numbers make this clear: In 2023, those injured on pedelecs were on average 53 years old, while on non-motorized bicycles the average was 42 years old.
Rising numbers and growing awareness
The attractiveness of e-bikes has increased rapidly in recent years. In 2022, 15.5% of households in Germany already owned at least one Pedelec - an increase from just 3.4% in 2014. The issue is also becoming particularly relevant due to the increase in the number of accidents, which has shown a worrying trend since 2014. In 2023, there were 23,658 Pedelec accidents, including 188 people who lost their lives. One reason for the increase in accidents could be the longer range and the increasingly frequent use of e-bikes, which sometimes compete with cars and pedestrians even in crowded urban areas. A question remains for many traffic experts: Aren't these bikes, which can go a little faster and further, also more dangerous than conventional bikes? As the ADAC experts explain, they do not consider pedelecs to be significantly riskier, but they do emphasize the need for responsible use and good infrastructure.
Overall, the development shows that with a higher number of e-bikes, a growing awareness and sense of responsibility is required among users. While the popularity of Pedelecs is fortunately increasing rapidly, everyone who travels on two wheels - whether motorized or not - should always be vigilant and considerate. Unfortunately, the accident in Ludwigshafen is by no means the last of its kind and represents the challenges that come with booming mobility on two wheels. A call to everyone: Be careful and fair on the roads!
