Stream sponsors save the Selz: Together to protect our waters!
A very interesting event recently took place in Sörgenloch, which highlighted the importance of the stream sponsors for the water maintenance of the Selz. The Selzverband, responsible for the watercourse from Alzey to the mouth of the Rhine near Ingelheim, regularly invites stream and water sponsors to exchange information and discuss renaturation projects. Lisa-Marie Luley, the association's technical director, highlighted the volunteers' tireless support and said: "Without the Bach sponsors, we would not be able to accomplish many of these important tasks." The Selz measures an impressive 63 kilometers and runs through picturesque landscapes that are maintained by the dedicated sponsors.
Twelve people and associations are currently active as stream sponsors who look after the health and ecological development of the water. Your tasks consist of reporting drainage obstacles such as dead wood and fallen trees as well as light maintenance work, which often requires real team spirit and closeness to nature. “The stream sponsors play an important role in the value-preserving encounter with nature,” explained Ute Klenk-Kaufmann, the Alzey-Worms district councilor, and warmly welcomed the participants.
Bach sponsorships in Rhineland-Palatinate
In Rhineland-Palatinate, around 720 stream sponsors are involved and look after around 2,760 kilometers of water. This initiative not only promotes the preservation of ecologically intact water conditions, but also raises public awareness of the importance of natural waters. The lack of natural water structures means that stream sponsors often have to actively intervene to ensure the ecological condition of the streams. This voluntary work is usually supported by local authorities, with many citizens and nature lovers stepping up to preserve and create natural structures.
The tasks of a stream sponsorship are diverse: from observing the waters to maintaining them and documenting the results. School classes and kindergartens can also be involved through internships and projects, which not only promotes environmental awareness among young people, but also awakens the necessary respect for nature. Local events and actions by the stream sponsors enliven the community and create awareness of ecological connections, which is particularly important for the younger generation.
Looking for participants!
The Selzverband is still looking for more participants and invites interested citizens, schools, kindergartens, nature conservation and sports clubs as well as local associations to act as stream sponsors. The goals are clear: ecological improvement of the water, natural development and flood prevention. Anyone interested in sponsoring a stream can contact Lisa-Marie Luley directly on 06132/7872165 or by email at Luley.Lisa-Marie@mainz-bingen.de.
The work of the Bach sponsors is not only a voluntary activity, but also a deeper connection to nature. “With a good hand and an open ear, a lot can be achieved here,” says Luley. Let’s work together to preserve and thrive the waters in our region!
