Rhein-Lahn sports district: Hölzer and Peetz at the top again!

On September 14, 2025, the sports district conference of the Rhein-Lahn sports district took place in Singhofen, at which the previous incumbents Werner Hölzer and Birgit Peetz were unanimously confirmed in their positions. Hölzer, who is proud of his 76 years of age and comes from Altendiez, will serve as chairman for another four years. Bechelner Birgit Peetz, who also received the trust of those present, remained at his side.

In his annual report, Hölzer looked back on an impressive development: During his term in office, the number of members in the 235 sports district clubs increased to a total of 47,202 - an increase of around 4,000 members compared to the last sports district council four years ago. This positive development makes the Rhein-Lahn district have the highest level of organization in Rhineland-Palatinate. Monika Sauer, President of the Rhineland Sports Association, congratulated the two and emphasized the importance of good cooperation between the various players in sport.

Challenges for the future

Despite the positive membership development, there are also some challenges. In her speech, Sauer pointed out the difficulties that exist in recruiting new instructors and trainers. The sports association has already introduced flexible training models to lower the hurdles, but the situation in the clubs remains tense. She also criticized the fact that many sports facilities are either in poor condition or are completely missing, which is seen as an obstacle to growth.

Increased energy costs and ongoing inflation are not making the situation any easier. The politicians in Rhineland-Palatinate are now asked to improve the framework conditions for sports clubs, especially with regard to sports facilities. Another focus is on supporting sports clubs in order to keep their activities at a high level.

Honors and awards

Another highlight of the sports district conference was the honoring of committed personalities. Ursula Ohl was awarded the Rhineland Sports Association's gold badge of honor, while Jörg Güll and Thomas Paulsen received the silver SBR badge of honor. Harald Gerstenberg was pleased to receive the bronze badge of honor. These awards are a sign of the valuable work being done in the sports community.

The sports development report for Rhineland-Palatinate, which summarizes the current figures on sports clubs and membership developments, shows the complex landscape of sports in the region. The data covers a variety of sports, which underlines the great commitment of the clubs and their diversity. The focus is particularly on highly frequented sports such as football, handball and volleyball, while numerous lesser-known sports also appear in the statistics.

Overall, it can be said that Hölzer and Peetz can start the coming years with a good hand, but the challenges surrounding infrastructure and personnel must be urgently addressed. It remains exciting to see how the Rhein-Lahn sports district will develop under her leadership and what initiatives will be taken to further promote sport in the region. We wish the sports group all the best for the future.
