Silver for Leo Baumann: Zweibrücken swimmer impresses in Berlin!

Last weekend, the swimming and diving hall in the Europasportpark in Berlin was once again the focus of young swimming, as the German Year Championships took place from June 11th to 15th, 2025. Over 1,500 young swimmers from 304 clubs were on the start list. Leo Ilias Baumann, a 17-year-old swimmer from Wassersportfreunde Zweibrücken, was one of the talented athletes competing for medals in Berlin. He did his work with flying colors and was pleased to receive a silver medal in the 200 meter freestyle, as rheinpfalz.de reports.

The competition was particularly challenging for Baumann as he had suffered from a torn capsule on his right index finger since the start of the championships. Despite this injury, he was able to qualify for the final of the 200 meter freestyle. With a time of 1:56.04 minutes, he secured sixth place in the preliminary heat, showing what kind of fighter he is.

An impressive competition

In the final, Baumann showed full commitment. Equipped with blue pants and a black swimming cap, he went into the water and swam the first 50 meters in 26.36 seconds. He completed his second lane in 54.91 seconds. Ultimately he triumphed with a final time of 1:53.51 minutes and secured second place. The title of German vintage champion went to Max Niklitschek from SG Essen, who crossed the finish line with a time of 1:52.98 minutes. Alexander Giesbrecht from 1. FCN Swimming came third with 1:53.59 minutes.

Baumann had a lot of pressure in the run-up to the championships, not only as an individual fighter, but also due to the departure of his WSF colleagues, Lukas Fritzke and Michael Raje, who were two years older than him. Both have been guaranteed medals in recent years, but were no longer able to take part due to their age. Despite these changes, Baumann proves that he has what it takes to also celebrate success. He has already won precious metal several times at national competitions and shows promising approaches for the future, as saarbruecker-zeitung.de emphasizes.
