Digital wallet is coming: This is how the EU will revolutionize your life!
What do we have here? The EU has big plans for its digital wallet – the European Digital Identity Wallet, or EUDI wallet for short. Anyone who wants to pay with their cell phone can now do so very easily: fingerprint or facial recognition unlocks the device, hang up and the money flows. This is made possible by many banks that offer this practical service for credit, debit and giro cards. But the EUDI wallet will be able to do much more.
The EU is planning a comprehensive expansion of the digital wallet by the end of 2026. In addition to payments, the wallet will also contain personal documents such as ID card, driver's license and health insurance card. This innovation could, above all, make digital life easier, and sr.de reports that proof of identity when shopping online or opening a bank account can be done quickly and easily.
A unified solution for everyone
Behind the EUDI wallet is an EU regulation that stipulates that all member states offer their own digital wallet by the specified date. Germany has already begun its own approach to exploring the technical possibilities for the new service. The practical implementation is being watched with curiosity, but the advantages seem clear: with a European ID card, for example, a German citizen could easily open a bank account in France digitally. Perfect for those who travel often or live in border regions!
But as rosy as the picture looks, there are also concerns. The Konsumerzentrale points out possible data protection problems. The user data will be stored centrally on a server, and it remains to be seen how well this will be protected from cyber attacks. Centralized management could result in users becoming a vulnerable point. The user's consent is necessary to pass on the stored data, which at least offers a certain level of protection.
Advantages and possible disadvantages
- Einfachere Online-Transaktionen
- Erleichterte Authentifizierung im Internet und offline
- Selektive Preisgabe persönlicher Daten
- Interoperabilität über verschiedene Plattformen hinweg
At the same time, there is also a list of concerns:
– Central data management could raise data protection issues.
– High demands on IT and data security.
– Vulnerabilities could arise from users themselves.
How will the EUDI wallet perform in everyday life? The consumer advice center sees a great opportunity in the EU-wide solution, but also offers a clear view of the challenges. Although the wallet is free and use is voluntary, the skepticism is not unfounded. Ultimately, users want to be sure that their data is in good hands.
The digital wallet could save us a lot of effort, but whether it can keep its promise remains to be seen. We'll stay tuned and report as soon as there's news!
