Renewable energies in Saarland: record values and major challenges!
The market for renewable energies is experiencing a real boom in Germany. Today, on December 26, 2025, the numbers shine: According to the Federal Network Agency's monitoring reports, the installed capacity of renewable energies has reached an impressive theoretical electricity output of 1,581 megawatts. The largest share comes from wind and solar energy, which together make up more than three quarters of the entire electricity mix if hard coal is excluded. SR.de reports that ...
Wind energy has now established itself as the clear leader: it accounts for around 66 percent of the total installed capacity, while solar energy follows with around 32 percent. These impressive figures are the result of a sustained increase in wind capacity throughout the year and rapid growth in solar energy from 2021 to 2024. Of note is the Reisbach solar park with an output of 24 megawatts, which tops the list of the most powerful solar parks. Other important facilities can be found in Tholey-Alsweiler and Remmesweiler.
The challenges of the data situation
Despite these successes, there are questions about the actual power generation from wind and solar energy. The exact amount remains unclear, which the Ministry of Economic Affairs attributes to four main factors: unrecorded self-consumption, curtailments of excess electricity, and the unclear amount and type of electricity imports. In addition, small systems under one megawatt are not included in the statistics.
Another interesting development is the increase in the share of renewable energies in the overall electricity mix in Saarland, which has risen by 16 points to 41 percent since 2015. Nevertheless, the share of renewable energies in primary energy consumption in Saarland is only a modest nine percent. Hard coal continues to dominate here, accounting for around 44 percent of energy consumption. This is particularly notable as the use of hard coal increased after 2022 due to the energy crisis caused by the Ukrainian War.
The global perspective
Looking at the global situation, current figures show that renewable energies already accounted for 34.3 percent of the global electricity mix in the first half of 2025, which is more than coal at 33.1 percent. Wikimedia informs that...
The conversion to sustainable energy supply is in full swing. Projections from the International Energy Agency suggest that nearly 40 percent of electricity demand could be met by renewable energy by 2030. This development is not only taking place in Germany, where the share of renewable energies in gross final energy consumption rose from 17.4 percent in 2019 to 46 percent of electricity generation in 2022. The Federal Environment Agency states that...
Conclusion: Another step into the future
Overall, the current developments in the area of renewable energies are encouraging and show that Germany is on the right track. But in order to achieve the set climate goals, further progress in this area is essential. The measures required for this, such as government subsidies and feed-in tariffs, will continue to be a decisive factor for the success of the energy transition.
