The terrible images of the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley in July 2021 are still deep in the minds of many. Over 130 people lost their lives and numerous houses, roads and bridges were leveled. Since then, at least 869 new sirens have been installed in Rhineland-Palatinate, representing a remarkable strengthening of the state's warning system. A total of around 13.8 million euros were made available for the expansion of the siren network, of which 8.5 million euros came from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Warning system on the rise
There are currently a total of 3,458 operational sirens in Rhineland-Palatinate. This underlines the passionate commitment to improved warning infrastructure. After the flood disaster, the siren network in this country was specifically expanded in order to be able to offer a better warning system in emergency situations. The South German reports that the improved warning options are also being promoted by the initiatives of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance.
The nationwide warning day will take place next Thursday, September 14th. On this day, many sirens will sound from 11:00 a.m. while the test alarm will be relayed to broadcast stations, digital display boards and warning apps. 22 municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate take part in the test, including 8 independent cities and 7 districts. Strengthening disaster protection
The siren network is part of a broader warning mix that also includes warning apps and digital platforms.
