Handball season 2025/26: Returnees and debutants ensure excitement!

It's getting exciting in the world of handball! On July 12, 2025, the signs point to a restart as the teams in the top divisions prepare for the coming season. Things are now getting serious in the 2025/26 Handball Bundesliga as preparations are in full swing. The teams in the first and second Bundesliga will go to their training camps in the next few days to set the course for the new challenges. The current season is the 60th for the top German league in men's handball and is therefore a very special occasion for everyone involved.

A look at the Bundesliga reveals good news: two teams are back after a break! The Bergischer HC is celebrating its direct resurgence, while GWD Minden is coming back after two years at the top. This return provides a breath of fresh air and increases the excitement in the league. A total of 18 teams will compete, including the defending champion Füchse Berlin as well as prominent teams such as THW Kiel and SC Magdeburg. Handball-Welt reports that the league will be played in the “everyone against everyone” mode. This means every team has a chance of winning the title.

Promoters and returnees

In the 2nd Handball Bundesliga there will be a new debutant, HC Oppenweiler/Backnang, who has just been promoted from the third division. The HSG Krefeld Niederrhein, on the other hand, is celebrating its return after a five-year absence from the German lower house. Such changes always bring dynamism and a fresh spirit to the teams, which always creates anticipation among the fans. Wikipedia informs that the league consists of 16 teams from the previous season as well as the two promoted teams.

Preparations are also in full swing in the third league. A total of 64 teams, divided regionally, compete here in four relays. These relay changes ensure that the teams get to know each other better and the games become even more exciting. In particular, those relegated from the second division will compete in different seasons, which could lead to additional surprises and unpredictable results.
