Price explosion for kebab: where the snack becomes a luxury!

Who would have thought that a simple doner kebab could become a luxury snack? Prices for this popular fast food dish have seen a steep rise in Germany. Loud Hurriyet Germans now pay an average of 8.03 euros for a kebab, which corresponds to an increase of almost 4% compared to the previous year. This shows that the kebab, which used to be available for little money, is slowly but surely becoming a status symbol among snacks.

The price comparison analysis of the delivery service Lieferando shows clear regional differences. Prices in metropolises like Frankfurt am Main climb by a whopping 25% and reach 8.99 euros for a kebab. In addition, prices in Berlin increased by 14% and in Hamburg by 10%. The legendary place of kebab friends, Flensburg, leads with the highest prices of 9.77 euros, while Halle an der Saale is marked as the cheapest city at 5.99 euros.

Price upward trend and the reasons for it

The price development over the last few years makes it clear that kebab prices have risen from a stable 3-4 euros until a few years ago to often 6-7 euros. Initially it was around 4 euros until 2019, but from 2020 onwards there were significant price increases, increased by the increase in VAT to 19% at the beginning of 2024. This change caused kebab prices to rise to 7 euros and more, it was reported Turkish market.

Inflation also contributes to this - on average, the annual inflation rate for kebab is around 11.8%. At the same time, the increase in ingredient costs, especially for veal and lamb, as well as rising rental and operating costs in large cities are having an impact. The increase in the minimum wage also causes prices to skyrocket.

Multifactorial price analysis

Another exciting detail about the price investigation is the extensive data collection that took place from November 2022 to February 2024. Over 2.15 million Google reviews from 21,100 restaurants were evaluated, using modern technologies such as LLMs (Large Language Models) to classify the data. This shows how data-driven today's business is and that classifications are often not perfect - how medium noticed that many reviews were mixed or entered incorrectly.

The results of this research revealed many insights into pricing. Especially in cities with smaller businesses, for example in structurally weaker regions or through special offers, you can also find kebab at cheaper prices between 5 and 6 euros. This offers gourmets the opportunity to resist a delicious kebab even if they are on a tight budget.

All in all, the kebab remains a symbol of enjoyment and convenience, even if it can cost more money than ever. The question remains as to how price developments will shape the classic snack in the future. And whether the catering industry can continue to keep a good handle on its prices and whether the classic will remain accessible to everyone. That remains to be seen!
