There is currently real train chaos in Schleswig-Holstein, which poses major challenges for commuters and travelers on the various routes. The Erixx railway, which has had to contend with massive failures in recent weeks, is particularly affected. According to reports from LN Online On November 24th, three connections around Lübeck were already canceled, and the following day this number doubled, which posed enormous difficulties for travelers.
But why are so many trains canceled? Company spokesman Simon Märtens explained that the main reason for the sudden absences was short-term sickness replacements. The problem underlying these absences is complex: the control center tries to replan shifts in the event of absences due to illness, but has to contend with collective bargaining regulations that limit flexibility. This means that trips have to be canceled when shifts are unfilled.
Current situation of rail connections
The problems are not limited to Erixx. Deutsche Bahn and Nordbahn are also affected by train cancellations. The general renovation of the Hamburg – Büchen – Berlin route will have a particularly severe impact, leading to its complete closure until April 30, 2026. The railway companies have set up replacement rail services for the affected passengers, but these do not always offer an adequate solution. For example, there are replacement buses between Kiel and Schleswig or Rendsburg. Travelers are called upon to obtain comprehensive information. The forecasts indicate that the problems will not be easy to solve in the next few weeks. The situation remains tense, particularly due to the seasonal waves of illness in autumn and winter. N-AG emphasizes that travelers are therefore even more dependent on information so as not to miss an important appointment. Although companies say they are prepared for the challenges, the reality shows that a lot of effort is still needed to bring train schedules back to normal levels.
