Important closures at the Rendsburg Channel Tunnel – Find out now!

On November 5th and 6th, 2025, the Rendsburg Canal Tunnel will be partially closed due to necessary cleaning work. The Kiel News reports that the work is being carried out by the Schleswig-Holstein State Office for Road Construction and Transport (LBV.SH). There will be temporary traffic restrictions on both days, which will involve certain diversions.

On Wednesday, November 5th, the east tube will be completely closed in the northbound direction from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. During this time, traffic on the west tube will be routed in one lane and a speed limit of 40 km/h will apply. On Thursday, November 6th, the west tube will be closed in the opposite direction. Two full closures of around 30 minutes are also planned for both days, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. During these time windows, a diversion via the A210, A7, Rader Hochbrücke and B203 is recommended. For inner-city traffic, the canal ferry Nobiskrug between Rendsburg and Schacht-Audorf is also recommended, although passengers should expect waiting times.

Background and maintenance requirements

The channel tunnel below the Kiel Canal has a high traffic frequency with over 35,000 vehicles per day. To ensure safety for all road users, regular maintenance and repair work is essential. The State Office for Road Construction and Transport Schleswig-Holstein (LBV.SH) has been managing the tunnel since April 1, 2023 and is pursuing a preventative maintenance concept to avoid unforeseen closures.

The cleaning work includes not only the tunnel walls and escape doors, but also the drainage systems and the emergency call niches. A whole day is required every year to empty and clean these technical systems. To maximize efficiency, these maintenance activities are scheduled so that they do not occur at the same time as cleanings. A cost framework of around 600,000 euros per year is allocated for the maintenance and repair measures.

Please understand

The LBV.SH asks residents and everyone who uses the tunnel to be considerate and understanding during the work. It is important that all traffic flows are disrupted as little as possible and that diversions can be used quickly. With a little patience, the necessary maintenance work can be carried out without major disruption.

Overall, planned maintenance measures will improve the safety and longevity of the Channel Tunnel, which is of great importance for the region.
