Liebherr is investing millions: Biberach is becoming the crane city of the future!
What is the future of the crane industry in Germany? An answer to this is provided by the Liebherr Group, which is investing an impressive three-digit million sum in the renovation of its plant in Biberach an der Riß. This was announced on November 5th and is a clear commitment to Germany as a business location, especially in times of economic crisis. With this investment, the company not only wants to expand production capacity, but also create new jobs and significantly improve working conditions.
Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH, one of the leading manufacturers of tower and mobile construction cranes, looks back on a long tradition: cranes have been manufactured here since 1954. Five phases of modernization are planned until 2034, which will focus on realigning production and creating modern, ergonomic workplaces. The first steps of the investment already amount to a double-digit million sum and the production capacities are expected to increase enormously: around 500 top-slewing cranes, over 200 mobile construction cranes and 3,000 tower pieces are expected to roll off the production line each year in the future.
A strong presence
What else is needed for a good business? Liebherr is well positioned not only with a variety of products such as mobile cranes and excavators, but also with an extensive range of services in the maritime sector and in the aerospace world. As one of the largest crane companies in the world, with sales of 14 billion euros in 2023, the company's roots are firmly anchored in Germany. Founded in 1949 by Hans Liebherr in Kirchdorf, the company has undergone impressive development and now employs over 53,000 people worldwide.
The Liebherr family has always managed the company's fortunes and still runs it today. Stéfanie Wohlfarth was appointed Vice President in March 2023, while Jan Liebherr chairs the Board of Directors. Your goal? To carry on the legacy of Hans Liebherr and continue to position the company as an innovation leader in the industry while facing the challenges of the market.
Technological innovations
And Liebherr doesn't just have a good hand in crane production. The company also deserves recognition in the area of recycling. For example, TAS Recycling uses Liebherr material handling machines to efficiently sort and process scrap. Not only are these machines robust, but they also offer intelligent machine controls that optimize the performance of the hydraulic systems. The technology enables faster work cycles and at the same time improves efficiency, making Liebherr machines an indispensable support.
With these advanced systems and the clear commitment to modernization, Liebherr impressively shows that it is investing in the future even in difficult times. Dietrich Birk, Managing Director of the VDMA Baden-Württemberg, calls these measures a strong signal for the industry and for everyone who works in the economy.
The coming months will show how the plans of Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH can be implemented. However, one thing is already certain: the modernization measures are not only a benefit for the company, but also for the region and the entire industry.
