Young knowledge: Over 1000 students learn how to fight fake news!
Media literacy is very important in schools in the region. The Zisch project, which will celebrate its new edition in 2025, is incredibly popular with 1,023 students from 20 schools. This comprehensive program teaches young learners how to identify fake news and understand the importance of press freedom. “We place particular focus on the distinction between social media, online platforms and traditional newspapers,” says Jan-Philipp Schlecht, editor-in-chief. This also points out how important professional journalism is in today's world. Over a period of seven weeks, the students receive the district newspaper Böblinger Bote or the Stuttgarter Zeitung, both in printed and digital form.
The project has its roots in the 1980s, when it was initiated by the Association of German Newspaper Publishers in 1979. The aim is to teach students in grades eight to ten and, increasingly, primary school students the basics of information assessment. The Stiftsgymnasium Sindelfingen has been part of this insightful project for many years, in which schools can participate free of charge. This year, the Zisch Project runs from November 17th to December 20th, 2025, promising an exciting time for the young media enthusiasts taking part in the project.
Insights into everyday editorial life
The students not only learn the difference between reports and comments, but also gain a deep insight into everyday editorial work. The lessons about daily newspaper production and the role of journalists are of great interest, especially for primary school students. Through the practice-oriented approach, the children should develop a good feel for the world of media.
The topic of fake news is particularly in focus this year. At a time when misinformation is rampant in the media, it is crucial that the next generation learns to distinguish between truth and fiction. The support from Kreissparkasse Böblingen underlines the importance and value of this project for the schools.
