Renovation of Sindelfingen's underground car park: 60 million for the future!

Things are getting exciting in Sindelfingen: The underground car park on the market square has been extensively renovated since June 2024. The major project, whose total cost is almost 60 million euros, brings with it some big changes. The old, dilapidated structures from the 1980s are being given a fresh coat of paint to sustainably improve quality and safety for users. According to the Stuttgarter Nachrichten, the shell of the first stage of the construction site has already been completed and the demolition of the old parts progressed in good time.

Mayor Dr. Bernd Vöhringer: “The underground car park plays a central role in the accessibility of our city center,” he says. A clear goal of the city administration and the local council is to create a sustainable Sindelfingen center. The challenges cannot be neglected, because restrictions for marketplace users and residents must be minimized during the renovation work. Nevertheless, half of the underground car park will remain usable throughout the construction period, making it easier for visitors to get there.

A contemporary makeover

The market square is not only experiencing a construction pit, but also a clear refreshment. The redesign of the market square is underway; the old cobblestones have already been removed. More green spaces, new lighting, a variety of outdoor dining options and a water feature are planned to bring the square to life. The costs for the redesign have increased from the original 17 million euros to 20.2 million euros so that citizens will continue to have an inviting place to stay in the future.

Particularly interesting: The Friendship Fountain from 1984 will celebrate its comeback in autumn 2026. The planned measures are intended to significantly improve the quality of life and the quality of stay in the city center. According to information from the city, the work should be completed by 2029 at the latest, with emphasis on creating an attractive area for all visitors.

A look at financing

What many people don't know is that the federal government's urban development funding supports such projects with considerable financial support. In the 2024 federal budget, a total of 790 million euros are available for urban development funding in order to sustainably strengthen inner cities and town centers and upgrade socially disadvantaged neighborhoods. The renovation and redesign measures in Sindelfingen could also benefit from this funding program, which also anchors climate protection measures as a prerequisite for funding.

In order to advance the project, various plans were drawn up by the planning community Zimbelmann GmbH, Mayer-Vorfelder and Dinkelacker GmbH & Co. KG. The construction decision to completely renovate the underground car park was made in July 2022, and the preliminary information for citizens took place in September 2020.

The challenges are great, but the city's commitment and support at various levels give hope that Sindelfingen will also make the leap into a modern, lively city center. The project shows once again how important well-thought-out urban development is in order to create an attractive environment for citizens and the local economy. While major construction work is underway here, the population is already looking forward to the positive changes that can be expected in and around the underground car park on the market square in the coming years.
