State medals for outstanding volunteers in the Gunzenhausen district!
What is going on with the village renewal in Heidenheim? This question moved those present on July 10, 2025 during the ceremonial awarding of the state medals in the Heidenheim Monastery, in the picturesque district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen. For Wolfgang Neukirchner, Head of the Office for Rural Development in Middle Franconia, it was an honor to honor three deserving citizens on behalf of Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber who have put a lot of effort into their communities. The honored personalities are: Werner Dorner from Enhofen, Beate Schlicker from Cronheim and Edeltraud Stockmann from Heidenheim. They all contributed to the betterment of their homeland in different ways. The ceremony lasted about an hour and a half and was attended by various political institutions, including state parliament member Helmut Schnotz, district administrator Manuel Westphal and several mayors.
Edeltraud Stockmann: Green thumb in the village
Edeltraud Stockmann was particularly committed to the greening of a 120 meter long footpath along the Gießbach. Active in village renewal since 2005, she has also left her mark as a founding member of the “Kloster Heidenheim am Hahnenkamm” circle of friends and as a former local councilor (2008-2014).
Beate Schlicker: The sports enthusiast
Beate Schlicker has over 20 years of experience as chairwoman of the sports club. She has also been a member of the Gunzenhausen city council since 2014 and has been particularly committed to village renewal, especially for the youth center in Cronheim. Their passionate commitment shows how important active citizens are to the community.
Werner Dorner: Volunteer pioneer
Werner Dorner is a veteran in rural development. He has been on the board of the Ettenstatt participant community for over 20 years and has also made a name for himself as an agricultural expert. His honorary position as a “Siebener”, a traditional position in Bavaria, and his role as former chairman of the hunting association in Ettenstatt make it clear how much he means to the community.
In his speech, Wolfgang Neukirchner emphasized how valuable volunteer work is for rural development. Ingo Steinbrecher gave the laudations and acknowledged the exceptional commitment of those honored, which is a sign of the cohesion and development of the region. This year a total of seven state medals will be awarded to Middle Franconia, although two of the medals have not yet been awarded.
Village renewal is also an issue elsewhere
Not only in Heidenheim, but also in Landau a.d.Isar, people are working hard on village renewal. There, private developers have implemented flagship projects in a “Village Renewal and Building Culture” competition that contribute to the preservation and conversion of rural buildings. The award-winning objects include the former count's forester's house in Wiesenfelden, which has now been converted into a residential building, and the "Schießl-Haus" in Burgdorf, which functions as an artists' house. Such projects show how rich the rural building culture is and how important its preservation is for the region's identity.
The Office for Rural Development (ALE) actively promotes such renovations in order to increase awareness of building culture and encourage imitation. A great approach that benefits many communities. [landentwicklung.bayern.de reports that…]
Overall, it can be said that commitment at the local level is of great importance for village renewal. Whether in Heidenheim or Landau – there are helping hands and creative minds everywhere who make life in our villages worth living.
