Winter operations of the ferry Seegold” between Überlingen and Wallhausen have been discontinued!
The Lake Constance ferry “Seegold”, which runs between Überlingen and Wallhausen, will only operate in summer from the coming winter season. This was announced in a statement from the cities of Überlingen and Konstanz. The last day of operation of the ferry for this year is October 5, 2025. This means the end of the year-round connection, which has existed since 1949 and was originally operated by Viktor Giess with a fishing boat for tourists. In the winter months, only around 30 passengers were recorded per day, a significant decrease compared to around 70 before the pandemic. Winter operations are no longer viable for cities for economic reasons, as Südkurier reports.
The financial situation is tense: Even though the cities increased the subsidy for winter operations to 5,600 euros per month in 2021, the income from summer operations is decreasing. These no longer cover the costs of winter operation. Higher subsidies are also not feasible due to the uncertain budget situation. In order to maintain the connection, the suggestion of a change of operator and the use of a smaller ship had even been examined, but both had no positive prospects of economic viability.
Alternative transport connections
The cities point to alternative public transport options that can also be used in winter. This includes a regional bus line between Überlingen and Meersburg, which runs every 15 minutes. The ferry from Meersburg to Konstanz also runs frequently during the day and ensures that commuters and citizens still remain mobile.
However, there is optimism for the summer months: ferry operations are scheduled to start again at the beginning of April 2026. It remains to be hoped that the summer ferry service will be heavily frequented by tourists, as the connection has now become a popular means of transport during this time. The prices for the crossing between Überlingen and Wallhausen are more than fair: a single trip costs 14 euros, a return ticket costs 24 euros. Nature lovers can also take their bike with them for a small fee (23 euros for a single bike ride, 44 euros for a return trip) Personenschifffahrt Bodensee.
The importance of the ferry
The “Seegold” ferry has played an important role in transport between the two cities over the decades - especially for commuters, students and residents in winter. But even in summer, more and more tourists are drawn to Lake Constance, who can enjoy wonderful views during the crossing. During the journey between the two places, refreshments such as coffee and cake are available, which further enhances the crossing. The offer is becoming more and more diverse, and it will be interesting to see how demand will develop in the future Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe.
