Teacher shortage in Baden-Württemberg: career changers are frustrated!

There is currently a tense situation for prospective teachers in Baden-Württemberg's educational landscape. Despite the Ministry of Education's efforts to attract career changers into the teaching profession, there are only a few positions available at high schools. A new report shows that over 1,000 trainee teachers gathered in an online chat to discuss their situation and protest against current recruitment policies. These young teachers, who are looking for work after five years of study and 18 months of traineeship, often feel unneeded. [SWR reports].

The Ministry of Culture admits that almost half of all applicants are unlikely to be accepted. The minister, Theresa Schopper (Greens), points out that despite the switch to the nine-year high school (G9) and the changed teacher requirements, fewer teachers are currently needed in the first years. The return to G9, a controversial topic, should theoretically result in increasing demand from the 2031/32 school year, but the pressure on young teachers and educational institutions is already noticeable.

An uncertain future

Given this situation, prospective teachers are advised to also apply for positions at community and primary schools to increase their chances of being employed. However, critics are of the opinion that politicians do not take the needs of teachers seriously and are calling for a significant increase in positions. These demands are becoming even louder as more and more teachers are leaving their professional lives due to the high workload and stress.

Some of the affected teachers are therefore already seeking their fortune at private schools, where working conditions are often better. The Baden-Württemberg Philology Association is sounding the alarm and calling for more measures to ensure the quality of teaching at high schools. A report from the Conference of Ministers of Education also points out the increasing demand for teachers for the period 2024-2035. It is analyzed that there is a shortage, especially in lower and upper secondary education, and that an increase in the number of employment opportunities for teacher training applicants can only be expected in the coming years. However, these hopeful prospects contrast with current reality.

Measures for improvement

According to the current KMK report, measures have already been taken to make teacher training more attractive in order to open up new target groups for the teaching profession. From 2024 to 2035, the shortage of teachers is expected to ease, but in the short term less can often be expected through training paths such as lateral entry. The prospects for teacher training are anything but rosy, but there is hope that with increasing efforts to improve the situation, new graduates can be attracted to the teaching profession.
