Offenburg introduces cashless payments: A step into the future!

A big step towards modernization: The Ortenaukreis district office is planning to convert payment processing to cashless procedures. From July 1, 2025, citizens will be able to get used to the new payment methods in the branch offices of the vehicle registration authorities in Achern and Wolfach. The rest, such as the locations in Kehl and Lahr as well as the main building in Offenburg, will follow from October. This decision, as Stadtanzeiger Ortenau reports, is intended to increase efficiency and security in administration.

The head of the finance department, Ulrike Karl, emphasizes that cashless payments offer numerous advantages not only for the authorities, but also for citizens. By abolishing cash, the costs of transport and processing will be significantly reduced, which should lead to annual savings of over 20,000 euros. The new regulation also complies with the legal framework, as the municipal treasury regulations require non-cash payment processing “if possible”.

Technological advantages

Cashless payment is characterized by effective processes and time savings. The introduction of mobile and stationary payment systems in public administration not only ensures quick processing of payments, but also simplified workflows for employees. According to eGovernment, cash accounting and cash transport are no longer necessary, which makes work in the authorities much easier. Mobile devices even enable payments in the field, so that citizens can easily pay directly on site, for example during traffic checks.

Digitalization in administration goes hand in hand with the modern expectations of citizens. Many have long since developed capacity for cashless payments. Whether through online payments or card payments, the benefits are clear: less risk and worry about cash, faster payment processing and easier accounting tasks through automated transaction data.

Social aspects

However, there are also critical voices about this change, saying that older and socially disadvantaged people in particular could have difficulty adapting to the new circumstances. However, those responsible in the Ortenau district are calm about this and are defending themselves against these concerns. The majority of the population has a checking account and therefore access to EC or debit cards. A switch to cashless payments is described as a necessary step towards a modern, citizen-oriented administration that also operates more efficiently and saves costs.

What's next? Greater attention to technical equipment will be necessary so that authorities can easily use the systems introduced. As GoCardless summarizes, robust and user-friendly terminals should be provided to avoid potential difficulties from the outset. The future of administrative processes will undoubtedly evolve as a result of these changes and enrich civic life in the region.
