Protect your bike: coding campaign in Villingen!
More and more people are turning to bicycles as a flexible and environmentally friendly means of transport. But this trend also brings with it an unpleasant side effect: the number of bicycle thefts is continuously increasing. In Germany, over 250,000 bicycles are stolen every year, which makes the situation anything but rosy. In Freiburg alone, property damage from bicycle thefts in 2020 amounted to around 1.3 million euros. It is not surprising that the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) has now launched a campaign to combat this trend.
The ADFC, in collaboration with the WerkboxVS association, is offering three appointments for individual coding of bicycles in July 2025. This coding is a sensible step to put a stop to bicycle theft. A special code is stamped into the frame of the bicycle, which in the event of theft can only be removed by destroying the frame. This means that bikes found can be clearly assigned to their owner.
Bike coding details
The coding will take place on Saturday, July 19th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oberen Straße in Villingen. Another appointment will follow on Monday, July 21st and Tuesday, July 22nd, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Werkbox Schwenningen, Villinger Straße 35-1. If there is a large crowd, additional appointments can be organized upon request. The cost of coding is pleasantly low: just 10 euros for ADFC members and 20 euros for non-members. Participants should bring their ID card and ideally proof of purchase of the bicycle.
However, the coding cannot be done without the support of members of the ADFC who are committed to safer and more comfortable cycling. Membership not only brings advantages for coding, but also access to Germany-wide breakdown assistance and special conditions from rental bike and car sharing providers as well as insurers and green electricity providers. Members also receive the bi-monthly ADFC magazine, which is rich in information for cyclists.
Insurance as an additional protective measure
For owners of high-quality bikes or e-bikes, additional protection through special bicycle or e-bike insurance is recommended. These insurance policies offer more comprehensive protection than household contents insurance. The compensation in the event of theft can be higher with such policies and includes not only the theft but also vandalism, accidents and more. Insurance cover can be agreed based on the new value or current value of the bike. The new value represents the amount you would receive for an equivalent new bike, while the current value represents the value at the time of the theft.
Overall, it shows that prevention against bicycle theft has numerous facets. From coding to membership in the ADFC to the right insurance cover – with a good hand you can effectively protect your bike from criminal activities.
