Starting problems: Senior shared apartment in Dorfen remains empty for the time being!

In the heart of Dorfen, at the Schützenhalleplatz, a new living space for seniors was supposed to be created with a lot of enthusiasm. But the reality is different: the apartments in the municipal residential building, which is celebrated as a flagship project, are still uninhabited. The rental market in Dorfen is overheated, which makes allocating apartments a real challenge. Of the 60 interested parties, only a few rental contracts have been signed so far and the building is still empty. This raises questions.

Loud Mercury Although the project is touted as a forward-looking address for senior living, there is still criticism from the city council. Many would have liked to see real social housing and more assisted living options created. Instead, the plans have so far been overshadowed by the inadequate facilities: the smaller apartments have no kitchenettes and the layout of the apartments does not suit all seniors. These defects lead to dissatisfaction among interested tenants.

A new home for seniors

From July 1, 2025, the first apartments will be rented to a seniors' shared apartment. How South Germans reported, the one to three-room apartments are located west of the old town directly at the city park and are easily accessible on foot from the city center. The basic rent is between 500 and 600 euros, depending on the living space. Previous seniors' shared apartments were mostly initiated by providers from the home scene, but Dorfen is leading the way with a new municipal initiative.

The new apartments are designed to be barrier-free and offer space for wheelchairs, which is important for the target group of people over 60. In addition, each tenant can run their own household independently. Common areas such as a kitchen, a dining room and a large lounge are also part of the project, which is intended to promote lively togetherness.

Common future or starting problems?

The prospect of a shared apartment is tempting for many seniors, but it remains to be seen whether all the starting problems can be overcome soon. Many hope that the planned viewings and the awarding of contracts will revive interest in the modern but still unoccupied apartments. Applications for the apartments can be submitted directly to the town hall, where the application form is also available.

With this initiative, the city of Dorfen would like to open up a way to meet the requirements for age-appropriate living. Whether these promising plans will become reality remains to be seen. We will continue to monitor developments on the housing market in Dorfen.
