75-year-old crashes into house wall in Ludwigschorgast under the influence of alcohol!
On Saturday morning, September 1st, 2025, a remarkable incident occurred in Ludwigschorgast, which fortunately had a mild outcome. A 75-year-old driver crashed his vehicle into a house wall on Obere Marktstrasse at around 10:35 a.m. The driver got into an awkward situation when he tried to avoid an oncoming car in a narrow area and lost control of his vehicle.
The good news: There were no injuries in this accident. The material damage, on the other hand, is not negligible: the damage to the car is estimated at at least 5,000 euros, while the building suffered damage of around 2,000 euros. The Ludwigschorgast fire department had to go out to secure the scene of the accident and clean up any spilled operating materials.
Alcohol influence detected
While investigating the accident, officers smelled alcohol from the driver. A breath alcohol test carried out showed a value of 0.4 per mille. Although this value is below the legal limit of 0.5 per mille, an investigation was initiated on suspicion of dangerous interference with road traffic. A little more than a glass of wine can lead to an unpleasant situation more quickly than expected, as the current statistics on road safety in Germany make clear.
A look at the development of traffic accidents
Statistics show that the number of road deaths in Germany rose to 2,782 in 2022, an increase of 9 percent compared to the previous year. Particularly alarming is the increase in alcohol-related accidents, which totaled 38,771 in 2022, representing an increase of 19 percent. While the number of alcohol-related traffic accidents has been between 34,000 and 36,000 in recent years, the corona pandemic temporarily caused a decline to below 33,000.
In Germany, the alcohol limit is clearly set and there is an absolute ban on alcohol for novice drivers and people under 21 years of age. A first offense under the influence of alcohol can result in fines and additional measures such as participation in an advanced seminar. Interestingly, insurance companies can deny or reduce coverage in the event of an accident while under the influence of alcohol, making it particularly risky to take the wheel after a drink or two.
This incident in Ludwigschorgast reminds us how important it is to drive responsibly and to comply with applicable laws. Fortunately, the situation here ended without any injuries, but the amount of damage shows that such an incident can quickly have serious economic consequences.
