These aids can be particularly useful if you consider that the choice of career is a major challenge for many young people. A look at the gender -specific shares in the apprenticeships shows that women are clearly underrepresented in some sectors. Rarer than men, young women choose training in the dual system. Only 66 percent of the training contracts concluded by women do not apply to the 25 most common apprenticeships, while it is 60 percent for men. Gender distribution in vocational training

It is particularly noteworthy that only women form the majority in three apprenticeships: in office management and medical professions, where astonishing 95 to 96 percent female trainees are recorded in the dental area. Health professions are therefore very attractive for women. In contrast, in male -dominated areas such as mechatronics or electronics, the proportion of women is less than 30 percent. So there is still a lot to do to reduce the gender segregation in the professional world and to open the doors to technical professions for young women.

In order to cope with these challenges, 45 percent of young people would like more support in career orientation in schools. With a better rolodex of options, there is definitely the possibility that even more women get involved in non-traditional professional fields and thus start an exciting career. The graduates in Cologne are now at an important turning point and are well equipped to take their professional future into their own hands.
