Onset of winter in Bavaria: Frost and slippery conditions endanger drivers!
Gloomy prospects at the beginning of December: The first of December 2025 will bring gray and cloudy weather to Bavaria, which will also affect other parts of Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of frost and slippery conditions, especially in northern Franconia, until 10 a.m. The situation is particularly dangerous in the coming days, as a storm is approaching over the Atlantic, which will further worsen the weather conditions. Temperatures of -2 to +4 degrees can currently be expected, while on the Zugspitze it can even reach -9 degrees. The wind also creates uncomfortable conditions, with stiff gusts of up to 70 km/h on the North Sea coast and up to 60 km/h in the western low mountain ranges.
The roads are expected to become increasingly slippery. At the beginning of the month, precipitation falls as rain in the foothills of the Alps, but as snow at higher altitudes. Slippery conditions due to freezing moisture can already be expected in the affected regions. From this afternoon the temperatures will rise to a maximum of 6 degrees, but further frost down to -6 degrees is forecast for the night of Tuesday, and dense fog may further impair visibility at night.
Risks and accidents
The winter weather conditions have already led to several weather-related police operations. At least nine such operations were registered in Lower Bavaria, fortunately without any injuries, but with property damage. However, an accident on the A93 in Upper Palatinate was tragic, in which three people lost their lives. This critical weather situation is a clear sign of how serious the situation is.
Above all, the connection between frost and freezing rain leads to dangerous black ice, especially on the roads in southern and central Germany. Drivers should expect increased risk and allow more time for their journeys. For pedestrians, it is recommended to wear non-slip shoes and walk carefully to avoid falls.
Looking into the future
The weather forecast remains tense. On Tuesday, December 2nd, the focus will shift from black ice to heavy snowfall in the eastern low mountain ranges and the Alps. According to meteorological forecasts, between 20 and 30 cm of new snow could fall in the Alps by Tuesday evening, while 5 to 15 cm can be expected in the eastern low mountain ranges. This not only brings a painting vibe, but also the potential for slippery roads and traffic delays.
For the west and northwest of Germany it remains mild with temperatures around 6 to 7 degrees, so there is no risk of black ice across the board. But bitterly cold temperatures and frost can also be expected on Wednesday night, which increases the risk of slippery conditions, especially on side streets and sidewalks. Stay alert and prepare well, that is the motto for the coming days. The easing of temperatures will only be in sight from Thursday.
