Strong female roles: The Musketeers conquer the Luisenburg stage!
In the idyllic setting of the Fichtelgebirge, more precisely on the renowned Luisenburg stage, a fresh and modern production of the classic “The Three Musketeers” will be performed this year. Susanne Felicitas Wolf has reinterpreted the well-known story about d'Artagnan and his four musketeer friends in order to bring the role of self-determined women to the fore. “We want to break down clichés,” says Wolf, underlining the desire for a contemporary interpretation of this classic story. Frankenpost reports on her belief that theater can not only entertain, but also encourage people to question existing gender roles.
The plot is well known: the young Gascon d'Artagnan moves to Paris to become a musketeer. There he befriends the legendary musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis. In addition to great adventures in which he has to defend the honor of Queen Anne, the romance with the married lady-in-waiting Constance Bonacieux also plays a central role. But not everything goes according to plan, because the scheming Cardinal Richelieu and his spy Lady Amber de Winter stand in his way. The production is opulent and thrilling, which only increases the anticipation of the theatrical event. Luisenburg Aktuell emphasizes that this version of the original story has the potential to take the audience on an adventurous journey.
Diversity on the stages
In times when diversity and inclusion in theater are becoming more and more important, addressing role models is particularly important. A recent study by the European Theater Convention has shown that social inequalities still exist in European theaters. In the analysis of 650 productions, it was found that women are often cast in stereotypical roles and that leadership positions in the theater are usually held by men. The study shows that performances by women can create a more balanced gender ratio. Bühne Magazin supports the call to create more transparency, especially in the Austrian theater sector, and to take the needs of different groups into account.
With the new production of “The Three Musketeers” on the Luisenburg stage, the team led by director Catharina Fillers is taking on this challenge. With the support of fight choreographer Annette Bauer and stage musician Vanessa Donelly, the piece is brought to the large stage, where the cast of actors such as Eli Wasserscheid, Paul Kaiser and Marissa Möller could also delight the audience.
In the magical atmosphere of the Luisenburg, the audience is invited not only to immerse themselves in the adventure, but also to talk about gender issues and role models. In this way, a classic story is retold in a contemporary way and creates the framework for a discussion about the future of theater.
