75 years of Dr. Alois Rhiel: A life full of commitment to Fulda!

A very special celebration is taking place in Fulda today: Dr. Alois Rhiel, the city's former mayor, is 75 years old. Born on October 6, 1950 in Ginseldorf, Rhiel left many traces not only as a politician, but also as a person. His life motto “Gratefully backwards, courageously forwards and faithfully upwards” testifies to his deep faith and positive attitude to life, with which he has always worked for the community throughout his political career. This is how he found peace of mind as a Christian and is still committed to various charitable institutions, such as the Antonius Foundation and Telephone Counseling, to which he makes a valuable contribution.

Rhiel came to Fulda 41 years ago after applying for the position of mayor. This application was to remain the only one of his career, as all other positions were offered to him. He began his path into politics in 1984 when he became mayor of Fulda. In the following years he gained extensive experience in politics and business, including his time as district president in Gießen and as deputy chairman of the Tegut food group. From 1998 to 2003 he was mayor of Fulda before being appointed to the Hessian state government as Minister of Economic Affairs and Transport in 2003.

A legacy of commitment and vision

During his term as mayor, Dr. Rhiel for important projects. This includes the Esperanto congress center, which plays a central role in Fulda's urban development with a cost of 43 million euros. Other initiatives include the construction of an underground car park under the bus station, the establishment of an IT incubator and the privatization of the municipal slaughterhouse. The development of the Fulda Gallery and the introduction of the citizens' office are also due to his commitment. Particularly noteworthy is his significant support for the relocation of the East Hesse police headquarters to Fulda, which had a lasting impact on the region's security architecture.

After his time as a minister and a stopover as managing director of OFB Project Development, Rhiel withdrew from active politics. Nevertheless, he remains a valued citizen and supporter of various initiatives, which is why he is also known as chairman of the Cathedral Choirs Association. His influence therefore extends beyond political borders and continues to have an impact on Fulda society today.

In his personal life, Dr. Rhiel is married and has two children, both of whom work professionally in Munich. Whether in his role as a family man or as a respected public figure, Rhiel has always shown a good hand for the needs of those around him. He feels at home in Fulda with his wife and enjoys being part of this community.
