Kehl demands BVB: After a 0-0 draw against Fluminense, the turnaround must come now!
It was a sobering start for Borussia Dortmund at the Club World Cup in New York: the team did not make it past a 0-0 draw against Fluminense from Rio de Janeiro. After the game, sports director Sebastian Kehl was annoyed by his charges' performance, which fell well short of expectations after a long break from competition, most recently a 3-0 win against Holstein Kiel in the DFB Cup. NWZonline reports that Kehl made it very clear both publicly and among the players: Things cannot continue like this.
“We have to deliver now!” was his clear message to the team. This year he also mentioned before the next group game on Saturday against the Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa, which kicks off at 12 p.m. in Cincinnati and will be broadcast live on Sat.1 and DAZN Daily Mirror that the pressure on the players is enormous. Kehl had many individual discussions after the game and emphasized that a significant increase in performance is necessary in order to continue to compete.
Poor performance from Borussia Dortmund
The team's performance left a lot to be desired: Dortmund hardly had any significant chances to score throughout the game, while Fluminense took more shots and took control of the game. Only the excellent Gregor Kobel in goal prevented a defeat. “We should have played fresher and more aggressively,” said the keeper after the game. This poor performance is seen by Zeit as a worrying sign, as the team was struggling to find its way into the game after a long break from competition.
With regard to the upcoming games, the situation is anything but relaxed. After the game against Mamelodi on Wednesday, Dortmund will face Ulsan HD from South Korea, who also got off to a tough start and lost 1-0 to Sundowns. Kehl recognizes the importance of the one point, but ultimately only promotion to the round of 16 counts, which requires two wins. Coach Niko Kovač is optimistic and believes that with a better performance in the next two games it can work.
