A 24-year-old man from Northeim, who is responsible for a series of bicycle thefts, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison at the Göttingen regional court. This verdict, how NDR reported, includes several acts that took place in and around Göttingen between April 2024 and January 2025 and in which over a dozen high-quality bicycles, including pedelecs and mountain bikes, with a total value of tens of thousands of euros were stolen.
According to the investigation, the defendant's goal was to sell the stolen bicycles for a profit. During one of his thefts, he was caught red-handed when he stole a Pedelec in Göttingen. But that wasn't enough: the man was known to be a drug addict, which led the court to order him to be placed in a rehabilitation center.
Further actions and consequences
The convicted perpetrator was not only responsible for bicycle thefts. In December 2023 he had 1,170 euros stolen from a cash register in a department store in Göttingen, and in January 2024 he committed aggravated robbery by taking cigarettes from a passer-by. He also stole a bag containing 3,850 euros from an open car. He has announced that he will not appeal against the verdict.
During a previous search, the police had turned the 24-year-old's apartment and basement in Göttingen upside down for other reasons. Interestingly, a 35-year-old is also suspected in this connection, while a 27-year-old has already been sentenced to a prison sentence of one year and eight months without parole.
