Free reading for children: Exciting stories in August!

In Cologne it will soon be all about exciting stories and the joy of reading! On August 21st and 23rd, 2025, the city library and the Geismar district library invite you to special reading events for children aged four and over, their parents and accompanying persons. Participation is free and possible without registration - as long as there are enough places, you have to be quick!

On the first day, August 21st, the reader Ina Laengner awaits the little listeners in the Geismar district library, Kerllsgasse 2. At 4 p.m. she will tell exciting stories. At the same time in the children's library of the city library in the Thomas-Buergenthal-Haus, Gotmarstraße 8, the reader Laura Liebig will present the book “The Only Way I Can” by Bonnie Grubman. This is about a rabbit who wants to fly and has to overcome many obstacles.

Reading fun for young and old

The second reading day will take place on August 23rd, also in the children's library of the city library. Hiltrud Althaus will read here at 11 a.m. The story “Let It Out, Knot Claus” by Julia Regett is about a nearsighted octopus named Klaus who swims into the open sea to find help after discovering a lump in his arm.

Such reading lessons are not only a real treat for the little ones, but also promote language skills and the joy of reading. They offer children the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of books and strengthen their concentration and imagination. According to lesefoerderung.de, reading lessons have a positive effect on linguistic expression and sustainably improve reading skills. A great example of how reading-promoting activities can go hand in hand with fun!

A look beyond the events

The Göttingen City Library not only offers these special reading events. Reading hours also take place regularly in other district libraries, such as in Nikolausberg and Weende. On April 15, 2024, for example, Ellen Richter will read exciting stories in the Nikolausberg district library and Kerstin Wagner will present funny adventures in the Weender library.

The idea behind these events is to introduce children to the joy of reading and to support them in learning language. Because as the saying goes: a good book opens hearts and minds. The offers are ideal for promoting creative and linguistic skills - without any hassle or boredom.

For anyone who would like to take advantage of the reading events: Places are limited, so come along early! Reading aloud - a real treasure in promoting reading - invites you to spend time together and discover the magic of stories.
