Kunsthalle Osnabrück: Ghosts” awaken memories for generations!
Next Saturday afternoon, the Kunsthalle Osnabrück invites you to an exciting event: the opening of the new annual theme “Ghosts”. From June 21, 2025 to February 22, 2026, three solo exhibitions will be on view in the former church, dealing with the multifaceted aspects of ancestors, the transmission of knowledge across generations and the painful legacies of cross-generational trauma. OS Radio reports that the program is supplemented by workshops, readings and concerts so that visitors can take part in a lively exchange.
The annual theme “Ghosts” is full of meanings. The aim is to promote both intellectual and emotional engagement with one's own history. Visitors are invited to recall their own “hidden ghosts” and “haunts”. The Osnabrück Art Gallery highlights that the themes of this exhibition are deeply interwoven with cultural narratives, traditions and the methods of community learning.
Highlights of the exhibition
The central topics include the challenges of passing on knowledge across generations and the examination of traditional craft techniques. The consideration of transgenerational trauma, which is considered a far-reaching phenomenon in various cultures, is also discussed in detail. The audience can explore the deep roots of traumatic experiences and their effects on today's generations. Present Past defines transgenerational trauma as the transmission of bad experiences from one generation to the next, which is a painful reality for many.
Transgenerational understanding is increasingly being discussed not only in psychological practice, but also in various cultural contexts. In this context, the work of the project “Hakara – Encountering Transgenerational Trauma” by AMCHA Germany is highlighted, which promotes an interdisciplinary dialogue between science and society. The aim is to shed light on the long-term consequences of violence and persecution and to raise awareness of current issues such as anti-Semitism and racism.
With its new annual theme, the Kunsthalle Osnabrück offers a platform to present these profound topics in a creative way and stimulate discussion. The second part of the exhibition “Ghosts” will open its doors on November 8, 2025. Let’s look forward to exciting insights and a lively exchange about our “ghosts” and stories!
