Solar power for Oberhausen: Westfield Centro sets new standards!

An exciting construction project is in the starting blocks at the Westfield Centro in Oberhausen. Several thousand solar modules are to be installed in the middle of Europe's second largest shopping center with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions. The operator, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, not only wants to make its contribution to the energy transition, but also significantly reduce electricity consumption from the network. Loud Ruhr24 The new photovoltaic system will generate around 1.1 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually, which corresponds to the consumption of up to 500 single-family homes.

The installation includes 2,770 solar modules, which together achieve a total output of 1,247 kilowatt peak. This makes a significant contribution to sustainable energy supply, as does the city magazine oh-city magazine reported. The electricity generated is mainly used in the public areas of the Centro and the excess electricity goes into the public grid.

A challenging project

The implementation of the photovoltaic system presents the project managers with high logistical requirements. The different roof heights and narrow spaces make installation a real challenge. The facility is scheduled to be commissioned in 2025 and will be part of the Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Group's comprehensive “Better Places” sustainability strategy.

The overall concept aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2015. This strategy is particularly relevant at a time when the energy transition is gaining momentum in Germany. According to that Federal Environment Agency The aim is for 41% of gross final energy consumption to be covered by renewable energies by 2030.

Photovoltaics currently make up around 16% of the most important renewable energy sources, while the expansion of wind energy plays the largest role. This shows that the commitment of large companies through projects like the Westfield Centro not only contributes to reducing emissions, but also plays a pioneering role in the implementation of sustainable energy solutions.

A center for leisure and shopping

Westfield Centro is not only a place for sustainable energy production, but also a popular destination for shopping and leisure. On 230,000 square meters, visitors will find over 250 shops as well as a wide range of leisure activities, including restaurants, bars and attractions such as Topgolf and SEA LIFE Oberhausen. Optimally connected to the infrastructure, there are also 12,000 parking spaces and charging stations for electric cars available.

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield operates 67 shopping centers in a total of eleven countries, 18 of them in Germany, and contributes to a stable economic environment with a total value of around 50 billion euros. With the new project in the Westfield Centro, the company shows that social responsibility and economic success can complement each other wonderfully.
