Living in NRW: Open doors for affordable housing at WohneNRW Days!
The anticipation for the upcoming “WohneNRW Days” is increasing in North Rhine-Westphalia! From August 27th to 29th, 2025, numerous housing projects will open their doors and present the diversity and innovation of public housing funding. The focus is on initiatives that are supported by public housing funding. Daniel Sieveke, State Secretary in the Ministry for Homeland, Municipal Affairs, Construction and Digitalization, is planning visits to cities such as Hagen, Remscheid, Cologne and Bonn to get his own impression of the projects. This is reported by land.nrw.
With a funding pot of 2.3 billion euros for 2025, it is clear that the need for affordable housing in the region is very important. In 2024, housing companies and cooperatives have already accessed around 621 million euros in funding. Of this, 32.8 percent of all funds drawn went into the creation of 3,208 rent-controlled apartments. As it turns out, public housing support is a crucial driver for the creation of new housing, especially given the high construction costs and difficult financing conditions that make privately financed housing construction difficult. Hausundgrund emphasizes that this support is more important than ever.
Diverse construction projects in focus
This year's events show a colorful spectrum of construction projects, ranging from serial housing construction in Hagen with 40 subsidized residential units to a new building project in Cologne that includes 191 residential units, including 152 subsidized units with a funding amount of 22.24 million euros. Other projects that will be spotlighted as part of the WohneNRW Days include:
- Remscheid: Energetische Sanierung der Klimaschutzsiedlung „Alte Vömix“ (Fördersumme: 2,85 Millionen Euro).
- Bergisch Gladbach: Mehrgenerationenwohnen mit 30 Wohneinheiten (Fördersumme: 3,8 Millionen Euro).
- Tecklenburg: Umbau und Neubau für Menschen mit Behinderung (Fördersumme: 3,1 Millionen Euro).
- Münster: 128 Wohneinheiten auf ehemaligem Kasernengelände (Fördersumme: 23,2 Millionen Euro).
- Bielefeld: 70 öffentlich geförderte Wohnplätze für Auszubildende und Studierende (Fördersumme: 6,3 Millionen Euro).
- Essen: „Literatur Quartier“ mit 236 Wohnungen, davon 52 gefördert (Fördersumme: 8,3 Millionen Euro).
- Düsseldorf: 39 geförderte Wohneinheiten in zentraler Lage (Fördersumme: 7,47 Millionen Euro).
- Bonn: 55 öffentlich geförderte Wohnungen auf dem Gelände einer ehemaligen Grundschule (Fördersumme: 16,42 Millionen Euro).
The WohneNRW Days are supported by various associations and institutions, including the VdW Rheinland Westfalen and the BFW State Association of North Rhine-Westphalia. This also makes it clear how important social housing support is for the community. Association director Erik Uwe Amaya emphasizes that property promotion is a central component in the development described, particularly through programs such as “Young Buys Old”.
Innovation and future
Another focus of the events is on promoting innovative construction practices and technologies. At the opening in Hattingen, NRW Construction Minister Ina Scharrenbach emphasized the great importance of public housing funding. The current need for action is also addressed: Construction costs must be reduced, which could also be achieved by revising DIN standards.
With the help of public housing funding, many areas are being tackled to counteract expensive housing and find sustainable solutions. The WohneNRW Days are not just about showing projects, but also about enabling an exchange between planners, builders and future residents.
