Ingo Brohl remains district administrator: CDU triumphs in runoff election in Wesel district!

In the district council runoff election on September 28, 2025, Ingo Brohl from the CDU prevailed with a clear result. Loud extra tip on Sunday he received 57.38% of the vote, which corresponds to 77,965 votes. His competitor Dr. Peter Paic from the SPD achieved 42.62% and thus 57,905 votes. Voter turnout was 37.66%, a value that can certainly be seen as worrying in times of increasing political participation skepticism.

The results will be officially confirmed on October 1st, when the district election committee meets in the district hall. Brohl's new term will begin on November 1, 2025 and is expected to last five years. Voter turnout highlights the importance of motivating people to participate in such important decisions.

More mayoral elections

The district election was not the only vote that took place in the region. Mayoral elections were also held in other cities. In Moers, Julia Zupancic (CDU) was able to convince the citizens with 63.09%, while her competitor Mark Rosendahl from the SPD received 36.91%. In Neukirchen-Vluyn, DirkSchauberg (CDU) prevailed with 56.97%, while Richard Stanczyk from the SPD and Greens won 43.03%.

  • Hamminkeln: Robert Graaf (parteilos) 50,17 % vs. Sascha Lippe (CDU) 49,83 %.
  • Xanten: Rafael Zur (FoX) 63,61 % vs. Thomas Görtz (CDU) 36,39 %.
  • Dinslaken: Simon Panke (SPD) 73,29 % vs. Dominik Bulinski (CDU) 26,71 %.
  • Rheinberg: Philipp Richter (SPD) 55,85 % vs. Dr. Stephan Wedding (CDU) 44,15 %.

District returning officer Dr. Lars Rentmeister thanked the numerous helpers who ensured that the elections ran smoothly. Such voluntary work is invaluable for our democracy.

Looking at voter turnout in general

Loud Statista Voter turnout is an important measure of political participation in Germany and plays a central role in democracy. In the 2025 federal election, voter turnout was a high 82.5% and shows a positive development towards greater voter mobilization.

The distribution of voters is based heavily on age. Voters between the ages of 50 and 69 are the most active. In contrast, younger people often show less interest in elections, which poses challenges for politicians to reach new groups of voters.

With regard to postal voting, the Düsseldorf government points out that the same documents can be used in the runoff vote as in the local elections on September 14th. In municipalities like Cologne, it is even possible to apply for postal voting documents online. The NRW Ministry of the Interior appeals to voters not to lose sight of the time for the postal service, as early voting is advisable.

The results of these elections are not only a success for the winners, but also a reflection of the political mood in the region. Now it remains to be seen how the newly elected representatives will convince their voters and what paths they will take to promote civic activity in the coming years.
