Wupperpark crime scene: drug chaos forces extreme cleaning measures!
In Cologne, the role of a crime scene cleaner is becoming increasingly important at Wupperpark am Döppersberg. The reason? Problematic conditions are increasingly developing there that appear unreasonable to normal cleaning staff. A daily encounter with rubbish and remains is now the order of the day, as Radiowuppertal reports. This development is not a coincidence: Wuppertal has established itself as a meeting place for the drug scene in recent years, especially since the opening of Café Cosa in 2021. Unfortunately, this also means that crime in the area, especially in the Döppersberg and Wupperpark East area, is increasing.
The numbers speak for themselves: the number of violent crimes has more than tripled since 2022. In 2022 there were 30 cases, in 2023 the number rose to 65, and so far in 2024 there have already been 102 registered violent crimes, including attacks with a knife. As WZ reports, this includes serious crimes such as homicide, bodily harm, robbery, coercion and threats.
Simply unreasonable
At the “Social Inner City Conference for Elberfeld”, the work of the crime scene cleaner was discussed as a necessary step. It should be noted that Annette Berg, head of the social affairs department, identifies crack as the biggest drug problem in the city. Crack, with its high addictive nature, often leads to aggressive behavior among addicts. Despite the special measures, such as the increased police presence in Wupperpark, no further increases in crimes have been detected so far.
The police have responded to the critical situation by increasing their presence and carrying out strategic search days and priority checks. However, the question remains as to how sustainable these measures are and what further steps are necessary to improve the situation.
Drug policy in focus
In a broader context, the REITOX Annual Report 2024 shows a comprehensive overview of developments in the area of illegal drugs in Germany. This not only covers prevention, advice and treatment, but also the challenges in prison and the consequential damage of drug use. An example is a visit to the DBDD data portal, where central key figures on the distribution, negative effects and the black market of drugs can be viewed. Further information is available on DBDD.
The situation in Wupperpark is a reflection of a problem affecting society as a whole when it comes to dealing with drugs and their consumption. Further dialogue and viable solutions are needed to both ensure the safety of citizens and offer help and support to those affected.
