Film sequel about Adenauer and de Gaulle: Bad Kreuznach in focus!
“On a day in November” – that’s the name of the film sequel, which is currently being discussed on the occasion of the important meeting between Konrad Adenauer and Charles de Gaulle. A film screening that dealt with these historical moments recently took place in Bad Kreuznach. Burghart Klaußner, who embodies Adenauer, was present as a guest of honor and panelist. Bundestag President Julia Klöckner moderated the event and emphasized the historical significance of the meeting for world politics. Bad-Kreuznach.de reports on the lively discussions that took place after the film screening.
Frank Zervos, deputy program director of ZDF, took this opportunity to draw attention to the symbolic plaque that commemorates the meeting between Adenauer and de Gaulle. He also expressed the desire for a film sequel to further illuminate the legacy of these important Franco-German relations. Mayor Emanuel Letz reinforced this idea and pointed out the importance of these meetings for German-French friendship and European unification.
A look back into history
The first meeting of Konrad Adenauer and Charles de Gaulle took place on September 14, 1958 in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises. Adenauer was on his way to Bonn from a vacation at Lake Como when he had the opportunity to meet de Gaulle. The atmosphere was tense because de Gaulle was at this point skeptical about Germany and the European Economic Community (EEC), which for Adenauer represented a key to West Germany's integration into Western Europe. Deutschlandfunk describes these beginnings, which were marked by great challenges.
Adenauer met de Gaulle in a personal setting, but there was no familiarity. Even everyday dishes were served, and Adenauer felt that he was anything but welcome. Nevertheless, the two politicians managed to work around their differences diplomatically and take the first steps towards a partnership.
Important milestones in the German-French relationship
The rapprochement between Germany and France was of central importance for Adenauer. Even before the war, he had recognized the importance of security policy in French politics. After 1945, reconciliation with France turned out to be essential for the Federal Republic's ties to the West. Despite the difficulties and great distrust on the part of both Adenauer and de Gaulle, there were efforts to intensify relations. A crucial step was the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). Konrad-Adenauer.de explains that this initiative not only served economic cooperation, but also laid the basis for the rapprochement between the two nations.
The importance of German-French friendship has not diminished since then. Today, more than ever, there is a clear understanding of the need for strong pan-European cohesion. The film screening and the conversations that accompanied it underline this idea once again and prove that the spirit of Adenauer and de Gaulle is still alive today.
Over 200 students were invited and applauded after the performance, reflecting the positive response. Klaußner received a lot of praise for his portrayal of Adenauer and, as the conversations show, the idea of a sequel to the film couldn't be more timely.
