Future concept for the Kusel district: challenges and opportunities in view!
In a decisive step for the future of the Kusel district, the kick-off event for the district development concept "Kusel District 2035+ - Our District. Our Future" was held in Quirnbach on July 4, 2025. Over 100 participants took part and the event was linked to the traditional market day. It was a moving moment that not only pooled information and ideas, but was also intended to strengthen the community, as rheinpfalz.de reports.
In his opening speech, District Administrator Otto Rubly highlighted the district's challenging starting position. Factors such as population decline, aging, weak economic strength, a small-scale municipal structure and acute financial difficulties represent major challenges. Nevertheless, there are bright spots: the district will receive five million euros from municipal financial equalization in 2025 and 2026. These funds are intended to improve the current infrastructure and advance urgently needed projects such as broadband expansion, local transport plans and a climate protection concept.
Challenges and opportunities
The challenges should not be underestimated. The lack of commercial space and the backlog of renovation of the existing infrastructure cast a shadow on development opportunities. In addition, the shortage of doctors and skilled workers are perceived as worrying. The question of health care remains essential here, as does ensuring medical care close to home, as the online vote by the participants showed.
Demographic change does not stop at Kusel either. demografie-portal.de points out that the change in population size varies regionally, and that both growing and shrinking regions face special challenges and opportunities. In some areas, digitalization could help find solutions – for example in telemedicine.
Participatory development
The process of district development should be shaped not only by the administration, but also by citizens, local actors and administrations. The Bad Dürkheim district has positioned itself as a “bridge builder” in order to unite different territorial and personnel interests. The goals include securing public services and taking advantage of individual development opportunities, while at the same time securing the district's digital and climatic future, as kreis-bad-duerkheim.de explains.
Overall, the district development concept combines ten fields of action, ranging from community and regional identity to settlement development to transport and the world of business and work. The active discussion among the participants emphasizes that the future of the Kusel district lies in the hands of the community, which is ready to tackle the challenges and seize opportunities together. District councilor Johannes Huber emphasizes that this is a joint task and it remains to be hoped that the path to a sustainable and livable future will soon be taken.
