Flensburg celebrates its first winter market: handicrafts and winter hygge!

There is a new winter experience in the air in Flensburg: On November 17, 2025, the city will open the doors to its own winter market for the first time. This market will take place between the Südermarkt and Nordermarkt and promises an irresistible mix of handicrafts and Nordic “winter hygge”, which will make the hearts of Flensburg residents and their guests beat faster. How NDR reports, the winter market's opening is scheduled a week before the city's traditional Christmas market.

The market is organized by the Flensburger Förde Tourism Agency under the direction of Bastian Basler, who emphasizes the economic necessity for this new market in order to strengthen retail in the region. But not everyone is enthusiastic about this project: weekly market operators express concerns that the new market could lead to a loss of sales. Pastor Marcus Friedrich has also expressed his concerns and is critical of the opening of the winter market in the middle of the church's week of silence before the Sunday of the Dead. He is convinced that a Christmas market should be part of the Advent season.

The traditional Christmas market

The Flensburg Christmas market will then follow from November 24th to December 30th, 2025 in the old town, where festive lights and Nordic-inspired huts will delight visitors. The market stalls are spread across several central locations: the Holm, the Große Straße, the Nordermarkt and the Südermarkt, where the festivities will last until December 23rd. A variety of handicrafts and culinary specialties are offered here, with something for every taste. Flensburg Fjord has already set the opening times: Monday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The market will be open until 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve, but will be closed on December 25th and 26th.

Christmas markets in Germany-wide comparison

Christmas markets are an integral part of the German pre-Christmas period, attracting millions of visitors every year. How ADAC shows, the range of markets varies from small, tranquil village festivals to large urban events. There are Christmas markets spread across the entire Federal Republic that impress with their regional traditions and special programs - from the Alps to the North Sea.

Now it's time to look forward to the winter season and take the first steps into the festively decorated city of Flensburg. Both the winter market and the Christmas market not only offer an opportunity for Christmas shopping, but also the chance to meet up with friends and family over mulled wine and handcrafted delicacies.
