New innovation district: Rotenburg's future is taking shape!

Something is happening in Rotenburg! A few days ago, the long-awaited urban development competition for the new innovation district was decided. Mayor Torsten Oestmann and the managing director of Rotenburger Werke, Sabine Ulrich, are pleased to present an interesting project that will have a lasting impact on the city center. A modern and inclusive urban district is being created on 5.5 hectares between Lindenstrasse and Soltauer Strasse, designed for both people with and without disabilities.

The competition, which is organized by Rotenburger Werken and supported by the city of Rotenburg, aims to create an attractive and forward-looking district. Not only should new living space be created here, but also green oases and meeting places that promote togetherness. This is happening in the context of a change in support for the disabled that has been taking place in Rotenburg since the 19th century. The historic area was once known as an “asylum for the care of epileptics” and is now being transformed into a modern living space that meets the needs of all residents.

Exhibition of designs!

From November 5th, citizens can marvel at the submitted designs in the old gymnasium on Lindenstrasse. This exhibition will present the sketches and 3D models of the three final selected architecture offices. Nine architectural teams had the opportunity to submit their ideas, from which the jury selected the best three. This led to an exciting jury meeting in which the architects were able to present their concepts to the members of the jury, consisting of city administration, politicians and representatives of the Rotenburg works, in 15-minute presentations.

The winner of the competition, the RHWZ Architects office from Hamburg in collaboration with arbos landscape, was able to convince the jury with a particularly innovative design. The focus is on creating a socially mixed urban district that increases the quality of urban life through thoughtful planning of living space, green spaces and leisure opportunities. Mayor Oestmann emphasized that the architects' designs were of high quality and in some cases had great similarities.

A look into the future

The coming weeks will be crucial for the further development of the innovation district. The entire planning costs 120,000 euros, with the Rotenburger Works covering 15 percent of the costs and the city of Rotenburg financing two thirds through urban development funding. During the judges' meeting, the importance of the historical heritage, some of which should be preserved, was also highlighted. Particular attention will be paid to ensuring that the new quarter is also accessible to people with disabilities.

From vision to implementation – this is the motto under which the exhibition “From Vision to Implementation” will be on display until November 19th. Those interested can come by Monday to Wednesday between 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Innovation Quarter has big plans and we are excited to see how the project develops. For everyone who regularly visits Rotenburg, there are enough reasons to take a look at this exciting project and become part of the change. Let’s be surprised at what the coming months bring!
