Bankruptcy at Hohenloher fruit juices: Juice shelf is threatened with emptiness!

In Schwäbisch Hall the fruit juice industry is shaking. The Hohenloher Fruit Juices GmbH initiated preliminary insolvency proceedings in May 2025. The company, which has been producing juices since 1953 and is offered in Rewe stores, among others, employs around 20 people. They now find themselves in a state of uncertainty while managing directors Teresa Heller and her team look for new investors.

The concerns about the future of the company are not unfounded. High crop prices, especially the costs of the apple harvest in the previous year, are affecting the company's financial stability. Do consumers still like to buy a glass of apple juice or orange juice? As expected, things could soon get tight. Fruit juice prices rose more than 30 percent between 2020 and 2023, and experts from VdF warn that this development will not be reversed so quickly.

Current developments and impacts

The bankruptcy proceedings are already affecting supermarket shelves. In some Rewe branches, products from the Hohenlohe range, including popular juices such as apple juice and orange juice, are no longer available. Loud T Online must decide by the end of July whether regular insolvency proceedings will be initiated, and the employees will be insured through the employment agency until then.

But the problems are not just limited to Hohenloher. The entire German fruit juice industry is experiencing pressure fueled by crop failures, rising raw material prices and high energy costs. Economic Navigator reports on the industry's sales growth, but also on the challenges arising from weather-related fluctuations in harvests and rising costs.

Price development and future outlook

Although the demand for apple juice remains stable, there are signs of a decline in the demand for orange juice. Per capita consumption in Germany was 26 liters in 2023, a decrease of two liters compared to the previous year. The VdF reports that manufacturers may have to change their strategy to offer cheaper alternatives.

The situation of Hohenloher fruit juices therefore only reflects part of the difficulties that the industry is facing. If no new investors are found, the variety on the juice shelves could shrink and prices could continue to rise. A rethink is required in order to maintain the appreciation for high-quality juice products.
