Bavarian airports: Memmingen overtakes Nuremberg in the passenger ranking!

In 2024, over 211 million passengers were processed at German airports, which corresponds to a significant increase in travel traffic. Particularly noteworthy is Munich Airport, which, despite some problems, was able to record an impressive passenger record. Merkur reports that the Bavarian airports of Nuremberg, Munich and Memmingen are among the top 10 in a current ranking of the 16 largest commercial airports in Germany.

When it comes to passenger numbers, there is a clear ranking:

rank Airport passengers Direct connections
1 Frankfurt 61.6 million 275
2 Munich 41.6 million 220
3 Berlin-Brandenburg 25.5 million 138
4 Dusseldorf 20.4 million
5 Hamburg 14.8 million
6 Cologne-Bonn 10 million
7 Stuttgart 9.1 million
8 Hanover 5.2 million
9 Nuremberg 4 million 58
10 Memmingen 3.2 million 59

Competition between Memmingen and Nuremberg

In the first quarter of 2025, Memmingen Airport overtook Nuremberg Airport in terms of passenger numbers. The impressive expansion of the flight offering by Ryanair and Wizz Air could be the reason for the new trend. Memmingen currently offers 24 countries and 59 direct destinations, while Nuremberg has 21 countries and 58 destinations. This shows that smaller airports can also play an important role in travel.

The ranking by [Augsburger Allgemeine](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/bayern/flughaefen-nuernberg-und-muenchen-im-vergleich-zwei-bayerische-standorte-schneid-bei-airport-ranking-gut-ab-109080028) also looked at customer satisfaction and found that Munich and Nuremberg airports performed above average. Munich secured fifth place among international hubs with a rating of 4 out of 5 stars, while Nuremberg Airport even took third place with a rating of 4.2. Memmingen, on the other hand, landed in last place among the Bavarian airports with 3.5.

Current traffic statistics

A look at the current traffic statistics shows that 19.94 million passengers arriving and departing from German airports were counted in May 2025. Compared to April, the number of passengers increased by 1.0% and shows a positive development. A total of 78.82 million passengers have already been registered from January to May 2025, an increase of 2.7% compared to the same period last year.

The recovery in air traffic after the pandemic is also reflected in the recovery rate, which is 84.2% in passenger volume. European air traffic has recovered even slightly faster, at a rate of 98.7% compared to 2019.

This makes it clear that air traffic in Germany is still on the rise. The Bavarian airports stand out and show that both large and small airports can have their place in international travel.
