Heat wave in Memmingen: Where can you cool off now?
It's currently hotter in the Allgäu than a chicken on the grill. With temperatures that really scream summer, the people of Memmingen are looking to cool down. But the newly planned “swimming structure” remains inaccessible to bathing enthusiasts for the time being, as construction work is in full swing. When asked about alternatives, passers-by react differently and talk about their favorite places where they cool off on these hot days.
André Hense, a 40-year-old water lover, always has a spontaneous decision ready when it comes to swimming. He likes to try out the surrounding lakes and outdoor pools, while Isolde Schwarzer, 66, prefers to go to the “New World” where she uses the new water playground. She also enjoys spending time in the forest or with her daughter by a pool in Tannheim. The 85-year-old Karl Kleinschroth, on the other hand, prefers the shade of his garden, but also keeps an eye on the outdoor pools in the area, such as the one in Leutkirch. He would like to see more fountains and drinking water sources in Memmingen in order to better endure the summer heat.
The construction of the combination bathroom
As the Memmingen municipal utilities report on their website, construction work on the new combined pool is in full swing. The roof is almost finished and the building shell of the pool is already closed. The facade work and the installation of the stainless steel pools in the indoor swimming pool are currently underway. The interior work has already begun and is a clear indication that the project is well on schedule.
The combination pool will be equipped with a 25-meter swimming pool, a teaching pool and a leisure area - a real gem for the city!
The financial aspects are also worth noting: the construction costs amount to around 45 million euros, part of which is financed by subsidies and the municipal utilities. The state subsidy of around 3.2 million euros net also benefits from a good hand on the part of the city administration, which submitted applications at an early stage to support the construction project.
A look into the future
The indoor pool is scheduled to open in summer 2026, while the outdoor pool may follow later. Until then, citizens will have to do without the fresh breeze and cool water. But the anticipation is already increasing: the combination pool will not only benefit the swimmers, but will also offer family and friends numerous opportunities to refresh themselves in the water and spend time together.
And even if the construction work faces challenges, the city is expecting a positive outcome! The switch to passive house-like technologies for heat supply using groundwater heat pumps brings a breath of fresh air to the entire project and promises sustainable use. After the summer of 2026, Memmingen will certainly be refreshed when it comes to leisure activities.
Until then, the people of Memmingen have no choice but to be creative and find their favorite places to cool off until the “Schwimmwerk” finally opens its doors.
