SPD visits Ursula Barrois House: Worthy help for the homeless in Weiden!

In the heart of Weiden, the SPD city council group recently visited the Ursula Barrois House, a central facility for housing homeless people. Mayor Jens Meyer was personally present and emphasized the enormous importance of this accommodation for the city's social network. He particularly praised the smooth cooperation between the various departments in the social community center, which is essential for the design and operation of this facility. Oberpfalzecho reports that Meyer emphasized the municipality's responsibility in social policy and the need for dignified accommodation.

A look behind the scenes at the Ursula Barrois House shows that a modern accommodation with a great sense of the needs of the residents was created here in 2023 and 2024. Head of Social Affairs Wolfgang Hohlmeier gave the visitors a comprehensive overview of the conception and structure of this important facility. The 21 apartments, including a special family apartment, offer space for up to 44 residents and provide a warm temporary place. The social services team, led by department head Evi Fink, also ensures systematic support and socio-educational support for the guests.

Help and perspectives for the residents

The idea behind the Ursula Barrois House is not only to offer the residents a roof over their heads, but also to provide them with assistance in returning to a self-determined life. This includes advice, support in finding accommodation and referrals to specialists and other help facilities. Social participation describes that such offers are based on voluntary and confidentiality and are aimed at helping those affected to escape homelessness.

Especially at a time when homelessness has increased significantly in the EU, it is even more important that local initiatives like the Ursula Barrois House work. The European platform to combat homelessness shows that social institutions do not work alone. Cooperation between European institutions, governments and civil society is essential to develop strategies that give homeless people a better life.

The visit to this house, which was also attended by Dr. Nasser Ahmed, SPD candidate for mayor of Nuremberg, took part, illustrates how important local responsibility and committed social policy are. The exchange with local specialists gave visitors the opportunity to experience the real significance of this facility up close. Not only is accommodation offered here, but also hope and perspective for people in difficult life situations.
