This special service was created in 2014 in the ASB Ruhr regional association and has since implemented over 2,000 wishes nationwide, including emotional excursions and family reunions. Many people have unfulfilled wishes, be it a final visit to the sea or a reunion with loved ones. However, they often face hurdles, be it organizational, health or financial. For this reason, the wish car is free of charge for those affected and a companion. With an unbureaucratic approach, the team creates space for special moments and memories that have high social relevance.
A heartbreaking example is Saskia, a passenger who took an emotional trip with her family to Lake Tankum in the Gifhorn district. This trip not only helped fulfill Saskia's last wish, but it was also a return to earlier, happy memories. The project has now gained a foothold in all federal states and is financed by donations from companies, private individuals and foundations. In Brandenburg, over 100 wishes have already been fulfilled. Thanks to lottery funds from the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Health, the financing of a new support car was made possible. A modern wish car is not only used as an ambulance with medical equipment, but is also equipped with panoramic windows, a music system and a harmonious lighting and color concept to ensure a pleasant travel experience for the passengers. The volunteers, often medically trained themselves, lovingly take care of all the needs of the passengers and their companions.
It is often a particularly fulfilling experience for the helpers to support these final wishes. They contribute their time and commitment to give those affected and their relatives valuable hours together. Many of the wishes granted are simple but meaningful trips that bring people happiness and peace in their final days. A trip into the countryside, a last visit to relatives or a happy visit to the zoo - these are the moments that are brought back to life by the Wish Car.
Between anticipation and fulfillment, it is up to the wish car team to make the journey as pleasant as possible. After the trip to Lake Tankum, everyone involved had ice cream - a sweet end to an emotional day. This attention to detail makes the work of the wish car special and allows the hearts of those affected to blossom. The wish car will therefore continue to be very popular, in the spirit of the slogan “dare to make your last wishes” and remains an essential piece of quality of life for many people in Germany. With the tireless commitment of the helpers and the donations from society, it will be possible to fulfill many more heartfelt wishes.
