Augsburg under pressure: No goal again in home defeat against Dortmund!

On Friday evening, FC Augsburg met Borussia Dortmund in their third home game in a row and suffered another defeat. Like that Augsburg Journal reported, the game was anything but pleasant for Augsburg.

Coach Sandro Wagner decided to resort to the controversial no-striker tactic again, with Mert Kömür taking the central role in the attack. Although FC Augsburg initially seemed to have more control of the game, this quickly changed. The team was only able to record 0.68 xG (expected goals), and the good counter-pressing situations resulted in no dangerous shots.

Defensive problems

The key to 0-1 for Dortmund was an individual mistake by Chrislain Matsima and Han-Noah Massengo. At this point, Augsburg actually had the game under control without Dortmund having any serious chances to score. This shows how fragile the structure of Augsburg's defense currently is.

BVB had shown a remarkably poor performance in the first half, but that would quickly change. After the defeat against Dortmund, Augsburg now has a disappointing goal difference, with the last three games ending 0:6, 0:1 and 0:1. The last goal-scoring campaign was a few games ago, which is more than worrying given the current standings.

Emotions in the stands

The mood among the fans was particularly striking. The Dortmund supporters interrupted the game with tennis balls to protest against the inconvenient kick-off time, while the Augsburg Ultras expressed their displeasure with the sporting developments with an impressive choreography and a banner. In addition, Dortmund fans set off pyrotechnics at the start of the second half, a topic that remains highly controversial in German football.

Just in the current season, the DFB has imposed over seven million euros in fines for pyrotechnics, as reported by Sports show reported. The issue is polarized: While some fans see pyrotechnics as part of football culture, the banning bodies rely on fines. Since then, fines have more than doubled.

A rethink is required

Norway looks at the pyro issue in a different light. A pilot project has been launched there to legalize pyrotechnics in stadiums in order to curb unauthorized use. Anders Kjellevold from the “Norsk Supporter Alliance” calls for the accepted use of pyrotechnics, supported by strict regulations. When asked whether German authorities should consider similar steps, the DFB's response remains unclear.

The challenge for FC Augsburg lies not only in their own style of play, but also in the atmosphere and communication between players, fans and associations. In order to turn things around, the club not only has to improve its play, but also win back fan support.

There are some crucial games scheduled for Augsburg in the coming weeks. Whether the team can turn things around remains to be seen. Fans and club management alike will be looking forward to the next performances – both on the pitch and in the stands.
