Train chaos in the Höxter district: week-long interruption from Monday!
A new era of rail travel is dawning, but not without its inevitable challenges. From Monday, August 11, 2025, there will be significant disruptions to the S5 and RB 84 and RB 85 railway lines in the Höxter district for several weeks. This is reported by the daily news. There will be no trains running between Höxter, Steinheim and Paderborn, which will mean significant changes for commuters and travelers.
The S5, which normally runs from Paderborn to Hanover, will be shortened to Steinheim. While the usual journey from Steinheim to Paderborn only takes 29 minutes, passengers now have to prepare for the replacement buses, which will take almost twice as long to complete the route and will take around 55 minutes. This construction work on the Rehberg Tunnel in Altenbeken will last until September 13, 2025, during which time the tunnel vault and the roadway will be renewed.
Relevant construction measures in the region
In addition to the work in Höxter, Deutsche Bahn will make extensive investments totaling over 35 million euros in Ostwestfalen-Lippe in the coming years. These measures are part of a larger program to improve reliability, safety and stability in regional transport, as stated on the website German railways is to be read.
Massive general renovations will take place in 2026 and 2027, for which replacement services are already being organized. Contracts to implement these transport measures were awarded following a Europe-wide tender process and a total of almost 60 million bus kilometers will be made available. The respective replacement services will affect, among others, the Hagen–Wuppertal–Cologne and Nuremberg–Regensburg routes.
Long-term changes in the rail network
The modernization of the rail network in Germany has already led to numerous major construction sites, route closures and timetable changes. Loud ADAC More than 40 main routes will be affected by longer closures by 2036. For example, the route between Hamburg and Berlin will be completely closed for nine months from August 1, 2025, which will also have a noticeable impact in the region.
Commuters should prepare for an uncertain travel time. It is advisable to check current timetables online and plan time buffers. It might also make sense to consider alternative connections to avoid delays.
The coming months will prove to be challenging, but the extensive modernization measures are a step towards more reliable and safer rail transport, which the Cologne region and its commuters urgently need.
