Construction work by Deutsche Bahn: Bergisches Land without trains for six months!
In the coming months, the Bergisches Land will be heading towards a major challenge: Deutsche Bahn will invest a total of 800 million euros in the modernization of tracks and stations between Cologne, Solingen, Wuppertal and Hagen in 2024. This extensive construction work will have a significant impact on long-distance and regional transport from February to July 2026 Solinger Tageblatt reported.
The extensive construction work brings with it some serious restrictions. During the five months of traffic chaos, no train traffic will be possible between Solingen and Wuppertal or towards Cologne. Long-distance travelers must expect diversions via Düsseldorf and Duisburg from February 6th to July 10th, 2026, which means travel times longer by around an hour, especially for journeys from Solingen or Remscheid to Berlin.
Regional transport and bus offers
Massive adjustments are also necessary for regional transport. The regional express lines RE7 and RB48 will be completely canceled and replaced by replacement buses. Passengers can look forward to new express buses that run every ten minutes from Wuppertal Central Station via Solingen Central Station to Leverkusen-Mitte. The journey time from Solingen to Cologne is extended to around an hour, compared to the usual 23 to 28 minutes by train.
In addition, the S-Bahn line S7 will not run between Remscheid-Lüttringhausen and Wuppertal Central Station from February to July. During these phases, buses will be used every 20 minutes. Travelers from Remscheid main station to Elberfeld have to be prepared for a journey time of around one and a quarter hours.
Comprehensive construction projects in the region
The modernization work includes the renewal of 81 kilometers of tracks and the upgrading of twelve train stations. In Solingen in particular, work is being done on the pedestrian underpass, the elevator on platforms 3 and 8 is being replaced, and the station building and passenger information systems are being modernized. In Wuppertal, too, new platforms are being built on tracks 2 and 3, and the platform roofs are being improved.
These significant investments are part of a comprehensive infrastructure package from the federal government, in which a total of 166 billion euros will flow into the renovation of dilapidated railway lines and infrastructure by 2029. Of this, 107 billion euros will go to rail in order to improve punctuality and reliability in the long term daily news also emphasized.
Work in the region is scheduled to be officially completed in July 2026 and represents a major step towards improved rail infrastructure. However, travelers will have to prepare for a few months of diversions and alternative transport options.
