New dormitory for system busters: hope for young people in Wuppertal!

A new residential home for so-called system busters is being built in Wuppertal, an important step towards supporting young people with severe behavioral problems. The facility is operated by the association SKJ - Social Therapeutic Child and Youth Work, which has been running a residential home on Görlitzer Straße in Wichlinghausen since 2017. But the existing half-timbered house is not ideally suited to the needs of these young people. Therefore, a former New Apostolic church in Hölken in Weiterbreck is being converted into a modern residential home that meets the needs of young people. The renovation has a cost of 1.3 million euros, and the club urgently needs support as it relies on donations. A doubling campaign by the Bethe Foundation has already promised to double all individual donations up to 2,000 euros, which is why the fundraising campaign is generating great interest.

The project launched could become a new home for many affected young people. But what exactly are system busters? These young people often have difficulty integrating into traditional care systems. Specialists from institutions such as LIFE Youth Welfare are faced with the challenge of developing individual intervention concepts to help these young people. A variety of approaches are required. “[…] Combination of therapeutic measures, educational support and stable caregivers shows positive results,” says a report on the integration of system busters.

Collaboration and networking

The sponsoring association, which also includes institutions such as the Elisabethstift, has been working closely with system busters for over ten years. Six youth welfare institutions are active in the network in order to avoid young people's care careers and to offer needs-oriented help. Regional networking also plays a central role here in order to receive support from a broader range of offers. Collaboration with other providers, schools and therapists is crucial so that young people get the help they need without being stigmatized.

A typical process of a system buster request includes the exchange between the youth welfare office and the specialist team, and the development of individual offers shows right from the start how important close contact and tailor-made help are. “Building a basis of trust takes time; patience and persistence are important,” said one person responsible. But the efforts towards integration are therefore of great importance. The positive developments in this area are not only crucial for the young people affected, but also for their entire environment.

The future of system busters

The challenges of integrating system busters into youth welfare are complex. Many professionals report the need to reduce stigma and present society with a balanced image of these young people. Violence and behavioral problems are often part of the problem, and young people's self-image suffers from prejudice. Practical case studies show that successful integration is only possible with specific intervention concepts and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The new facility in Wuppertal is of course not isolated, but is part of a large network that operates across the region. Comprehensive support that also offers support in crisis situations is essential for the future of these young people. Trust and security are the central pillars on which these projects are based. Therefore, community support is not only desirable but essential to setting these youth on a better path.

We would like to point out that donations for the new dormitory can be sent to the SKJ e.V. donation account at Sparkasse Wuppertal using the keyword “System Sprenger”. The IBAN of the account is: DE66 3305 0000 0000 2576 91. Every amount counts and contributes to significantly improving the quality of life of young people.
