Starting signal for FaktenSicher”: Democracy in danger - join in!

Today, October 9, 2025, the starting signal is given for the new event series “Fact Safe for Democracy”. Around 250 adult education centers in Germany are taking part in this important initiative, which is organized by the ARD media competence team and the adult education center regional associations of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate. The series aims to discuss the importance of reliable information in a democratic society and provides a forum for discussion on important issues such as disinformation, populism and hate in the media. Ahrweiler district reports that the main aim here is to support the participants in forming and expressing their opinions.

Each of the events takes place every two weeks on Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is offered in an interactive format. Participants can take part from the comfort of their own home and have the opportunity to communicate directly with speakers. This makes it easier to access important information about the work of public broadcasting and provides exciting insights into the work of news editors and fact finders. Anyone who is interested can register directly with the participating adult education centers or find out more via the ARD website. Details are on vhs-bw.de to view.

A contribution to democracy

The “FactsSafe for Democracy” series makes an important contribution to democracy by offering a platform for self-determined opinion formation. Another important goal is to encourage participants to take active action against fake news. This not only strengthens individual media sovereignty, but also promotes conscious handling of information. Michael Müller, a project manager from Baden-Württemberg, emphasizes that adult education centers and public broadcasting together make a significant contribution to democracy, freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

Interactive tools during online events allow participants to be actively involved in the dialogue. This not only guarantees exciting discussions, but also helps you get to know and understand different perspectives. At a time when disinformation and populist tendencies are increasingly at the forefront, it is even more important that such initiatives shed light on the importance of verified and reliable information.
