Lumer crisis threatens: Experts warn of loss of agricultural areas!

Especially in these challenging times when climate change is becoming increasingly noticeable, agriculture in Germany faces a big task. According to the current soil protection report of the Federal Government, which was published in the summer of 2025, we are not exactly celebrating a sense of achievement. Around 10 percent of German agricultural areas threaten to become unusable in a few decades. This alarming forecast primarily affects outdated bogs, which may lose their agricultural production ability, which includes about 8% of the area of German agriculture. This is not a cardboard handle - there is really something!

Climate change additionally tightens the situation. The weather is not only unpredictable, but also particularly dry, as the drought in the first half of 2025 shows, which has been the driest since 1893. Regionary, especially in Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate and South Thuringia, the extreme drought is a great challenge. Two thirds of the German farmers report negative effects on their harvests. This is not only a local problem, but also has far -reaching consequences for nutritional security.

Regenerative Agriculture: A Solution Approach

In order to counter this threatening situation, experts demand immediate measures to protect our soils. The Save Soil Movement, which has been committed to maintaining soil resources for years, emphasizes that frequent drought conditions accelerate the processes of ground degradation. Praveena Sridhar of movement raises the alarm: "Without systemic changes, we could lose the soils that feed the population." A common approach to preserving soil health are regenerative agricultural practices.

Above all, these practices appreciate the interaction of various ways to protect the soils. This includes the mid -crop cultivation, reduced soil processing and an increased supply of organic substance. The principles of the Conservation Agriculture, as propagated by the FAO, rely on minimal soil interventions, permanent soil cover and diverse crop rotations. These measures aim to secure the health and fertility of the soils, which in the end also benefits the yield.

Reconcile profitability and sustainability

But it's not just about preserving floors - regenerative agriculture also brings economic advantages. An analysis of an agricultural construction company shows that regenerative practices can reduce agricultural emissions by 30 percent and thus lead to an improved sustainability balance in the agricultural industry. The overall emissions of the company were also reduced by 15 percent. These results come from the practice guidelines on the regenerative agriculture of PWC Germany and the Agritech company Klim.

In addition, the findings show that the yield in winter wheat could be increased by seven percent. This shows that it is worth relying on future -proof growing methods. Close cooperation between agriculture, processing industry and food retail is crucial to ensure sustainable transformation.

The challenges are great and time is urged, but with the right approach we can protect our soil and secure the future of our agriculture. Experts demand that political decision -makers and financial institutions integrate soil protection and recovery into their environmental goals. Only then do we have a chance to feed the coming generations and at the same time maintain our environment.
